MTS files into FInal Cut Pro 6

Only .MTS? Not the full card structure? I hope it’s the entire card structure, because without that you need to rely on third party solutions to convert.

FCP 6 is pretty old to be dealing with the AVCHD format. it works with some, but not the newer formats. But if you have the full card structure, you’d use the Log and Transfer option. Here’s the workflow for that:

If you only have the MTS files…or if Log and Transfer doesn’t work for any other reason, you need to use ClipWrap2 from divergentmedia.com. Handbrake won’t work, nor will MPEG STREAMCLIP.

Sigh, then bill it through to the client. If they complain, it’s a fee for being too dumb to give you the right material that would not have required additional expense to work with.

How is it that NO ONE still knows to keep the card intact. Why doesn’t Panasonic put this in BIG letters on the manual?
Curious annoyed minds want to know.

Exactly! I am a professional but am surrounded by amateurs. Everyone has a HD camera. And NO ONE knows a damn thing about the cards. It seems almost incomprehensible that the camcorder manufacturers just totally ignore this issue.

I’ve had this problem to. I wanted to be cheap and tried a lot of ‘free mts converters’ found on google. Lots of pain, no gain.. so do your self a favor and spent some cash on it. Wondershare Video Converter does the trick too, and with 40 bucks it a bit cheaper than CipWrap.

FWIW, there’s a freeware workaround that definitely works (I’ve used it myself many times), but it takes a little while.

I use tsMuxerGUI to demux the .mts, then MKVtools to rewrap the streams as MKV. After that, they can be opened in QT7 (if you have Perian installed) and exported to ProRes.

I’ve used this https://appshopper.com/mac/video/tipard-mts-converter on some .mts stuff someone gave me a while back, worked for me, converted to ProRes and dropped into FCP7 with no problem – it’s free on the App store atm.
