So you´ve answered yoursel pretty clear: do the upgrade to CS6 now and stash it in the closet until you really need it or until you upgrade your system. Meanwhile, keep on working with the version that really fits your actual editing needs if you´re not planning a system or OS upgrade.

It depends. For example CS3 had better slow motion feature than any other version, i miss it very much as I haven´t obtained similar slow motions in any of the newer versions. I really liked very much CS3, but… Can´t take advantage of 64 bit OS so you can´t use more than 3 gb ram (in pc world). 64 bit versions (CS5, 5.5. and CS6) have improved render engine (Mercury playback engine) and many other things like newer sequence presets, more export formats, warp stabilizer (CS6) and so on.
But my feeling is that every new version comes out, it has some improvements but loose some features in the way between that where working fine and people was used to work with. Personally i don´t like very much changes made in CS6, edit icon changes in timeline, new monitors, etc… Basically i mean the interface stuff and some other things i find completely useless. My thought is that Adobe guys have made all this changes only thinking in making it easyer for people moving from FCP or other NLEs, but not in Premiere Pro veterans (like me) who liked the “face” and icon world of Premiere and the way it worked always. If it´s useful for you, i haven´t updated to CS6. I´m working with CS5.5, and still have my CS3 installed on a WindowsXP drive, which i still use sometimes. I think i´ll wait for a long time to upgrade to cs6 as it has nothing attractive to offer me that i find really useful(except Warp Stabilizer, but i have it in After Effects CS5.5, so i really don´t mind).
Finally my advice is that if you are comfortable using CS3 for the work you make, don´t really need to upgrade. You´ll have more performance in 64 bit versions, but need more machine, ram, graphics card, etc… so you´ll have to think about not only upgrading Premiere, but perhaps your system too, and if you´re working fine with what you have, why change?Regards

November 18, 2012 at 12:56 am in reply to: Quickly changing still images duration to synch with titlesIn PPro, you can place sequence markers where titles start and finish, then select all the images in the proyect pannel and click automate to sequence button, select “place in markers” option in the automate to sequence window. To avoid pictures being shorter than any space between two markers, and having to refit manually in the timeline, select a longer duration for still images BEFORE importing pictures in the “Still images duration” option in the General tab of the Preferences.

The tilde key toggles full screen the pannel where you have placed your mouse. So if you have your Program monitor pannel in the same monitor than your timeline, you´ll loose your timeline when having program monitor in fullscreen view. Perhaps you need to rearrange your workspace having this in mind.

November 13, 2012 at 7:22 pm in reply to: Display driver stopped respondng and has recovered errorI have an ASUS hybrid laptop with only 6 gb ram and Intel HD 3000 family + nvidia geforce 610M 2gb graphics card for my onroad edits. These hybrid pcs are not the best machines for Premiere, i found lots of problems to enable Mercury Playback Engine in GPU mode, all of them in CS5.5. But…. In Premiere CS5 it worked more or less, the problem was when i closed the program, i had to force it to closing because it get hanged everytime, but anyway i could make my edits without further problems. Last week i updated Intel HD 3000 family with latest drivers, and installed a nvidia driver i found over the internet (not in nvidia site, as in there i couldn´t find drivers for my graphics card). After doing all this, i installed CS6 and voilá! Now i´m editing with MPE enabled and it´s running very smoothly. I don´t know if the solution was updating drivers or installing CS6 with the latest updates, the fact is that now it works fine.
You won´t be able to enable MPE in GPU mode as your second graphics card is not nvidia, but anyway you should run premiere in software mode without problems. This said, i think the problem is your graphics cards driver install. Perhaps you need a clean install of the latest drivers for both graphics card, and of course, an update of Premiere CS6 to 6.0.3 if you have not done it yet.

What do you mean with fixing old footage? Problems like dust, scratches, etc..? I don´t know any plugin to fix this, except perhaps adding some soft blur, but i think it´s no worth using blur as the images will loose sharpen.
For colour correction you can apply Premiere´s Fast Colour Correction or three way color correction it in one clip, save this colour correction as a preset and apply it to all the others to automate the job. Also for colour correction there´s a plugin from Red Giant, Magic Bullet Looks, but i think that for your needs it could be enough the Premiere fast colour correction saved as a preset, as the MBL take more time to render and his presets are usually a little bit agressive with the image.

November 12, 2012 at 10:04 am in reply to: Vector titles pixel-ee while video looks awesomeHow did you configure your sequence settings? Interlaced or progresive? Resolution?
You are using preview files in export, and depending on your previews configuration in the proyect perhaps they are not at full res or perhaps Media Encoder is using your sequence interlaced rendered previews in a progresive export. Check your sequence config. and try deselecting the “use previews” option in export window.

One of the most important things in playing back compressed HD footage is your hard disks configuration. Media have to be placed in your fastest hard drive, programs and OS in different hard drive.
Have a look at this thread: https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/931788
Having a Nvidia MPE compatible graphics card also helps, yours is not.
Try also clearing old media cache in Preferences window.Regards
