March 7, 2007 at 3:46 pm in reply to: to 24p or not to 24p, that is my question…

“Some of the footage I shot in 24p seemed to be a bit out of focus whereas the stuff I shot in 60i with the same settings was nicely focused. I had the camera on autofocus most of the time, so I’m wondering if the difficulty with focus is because of the slower shutter speed in 24p? Or some other factor related to 24p? Or using auto instead of manual focus? I was doing street shots, so it seemed easier to just put it on auto focus while shooting these tests. Any illumination here greatly appreciated.”

Anyone, correct me if I’m wrong, but when in 24P mode, you must focus manually. You lose the autofocus feature when you aren’t shooting 60i.
Shooting in 24P, I always check focus before I start rolling.

February 23, 2007 at 6:25 pm in reply to: what would you do? – employee question

Yours is a video production business, no? Just asking cuz you were talking about “venting”.
I wonder if any of your employees might stumble across this thread, I mean, it’s pretty specific, and we are a relatively small industry.
I don’t know if I’d be too jazzed about working for a company that airs their dirty laundry online…

Do you have access to a c-stand? Your best bet would be to mount the shotgun above your interviewees as close as you can w/o busting frame.

As for your option “b”, you could always juggle the mike & camera duties, but that sounds like a recipe for disaster. Better off mounting it to your camera, or back to my first idea.

July 11, 2006 at 6:59 pm in reply to: Buying a G5

I’ll weigh in with my 2 cents:

1. If you need/want a new machine now, get it. There’s never going to be an “optimal” time to buy a computer. I just bought a 2Gz, works fine for me. I’ll use it, make money, and when something better comes along, I’ll look into buying it. (I was also leery about being a beta tester for the new Intels, so I bought the current version.)

2. Take a look at this link for your upgrade question:
https://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
The upgrade is really nice. FYI, you assumed right: my 4.5 version wouldn’t work with the G5 graphics card, as has been covered in this forum before.

4. Apple charges a lot for ram. You’d be much better off getting it from Crucial. I know that’s what I’m going to do.

July 7, 2006 at 1:12 pm in reply to: Wedding Shoots

My personal opinion (and I’ll probably get blasted for this) is stay away from the DVX for weddings/event shoots. Two major problem areas for me: Short focal length/Not the greatest in low light situations. For a wedding, you’re probably going to want a camera with a great zoom, and the DVX just doesn’t have that.

A great camera I would recommend for weddings would be a Canon GL2. Just purchase audio adapters if you want to use an XLR microphone or lav. Seriously, that camera produces great colors, and it’s super cheap.

The DVX is a GREAT camera for shooting commercials, indy movies, etc, but I’ve found that for the event work I do, it comes up a bit short.

Go to this thread from the DVX User site. Read it, print out the “DVX100a Basic Primer”, stick it in your camera bag for future reference. It helped me.

Right, I’m sifting through old posts which are helpful, but if anyone wants to offer up their opinion circa May 11th, 2006, I’m listening.

Thanks,
Scott
