I know that this is an endless debate and that editing R3D on proxies and conform outside for more than hd, Or simply to CC in a dedicated app, reframe etc… is not for everyone, but…
Yes it’s a step more, and #7 Ian’t going to break the hd barrier anyway but just crop. (Would have prefered to
See a DS upgrade at NAB, but…)
If we’re talking about small volume and tasks like weadings, PP is a better option. A red rocket could also
Be considered.
But editing in dnxhd lowres and conform later to R3Ds has serious advantages and not just a painfull obliged step. Sometimes, more is more. But will depend on the Type of work. A non-transcode
Workflow is not the ultimate
Holly grail imo. Personaly, even
With ama, I don’t consider avid
A “transcode-free” nle, regardless
Of the amaed format. In many ways,
Avid leads to a kind of editing spirit,
If I may say it like that, and I
Understand that it’s not for
Everyone’s needs.Fred.

On media that can be reused outside Avid? In any different app?
Fred.

So I guess you are going to a 4:3 sd project?
There will be cropped involved anyway and you are not only mixing different aspect ratio but also different
Resolutions. And what about
Framerates?
You are going to have a drastic lost in resolution if you zoom-in, unless you
Establish your Project to sd, wich is your plan
If I understand well, and reduce
Your hd material.
If you do the opposite, you’d have to degrade on purpose your hd footage so there is no visual jump between the different sources.
Probably the best bet is that you
Lock your project to your sd specs,
Then create a 720p project with all
The hd material included The 1080
In the case they all match framerate
Otherwise you’d have to create
A 720 project for each,
and bring the bin, Or bins
Into the sd project, then crop your
Hd clip saving the effect into a bin
So you can reuse-bring the effect on each hd
Segment you used.
Lots of little manips but it will
Work fine.Fred.

Thanks James
Yes, the animatte has tracker too. But can’t picture if there is really any advantage on using it over the paint effect. (or vice-versa in the end)It seems that there are 2 schools on Gmasks. The ones like me who have been used to mask with the paint-effect, and the ones who prefer using the animatte. Both do the job on Gmasks, but is there a reason (or situation) to prefer one over the other?

Totally agree.
Working avchd native is to be avoid, although very fashionable those days, unless there is good reason for it: little volume, fast turnarround requiered. Also true that there is a point where it’s virtually impossible to see a visual difference between codecs so not necesarly is required to jump to the very
Highest. But it would also depend very much on how far are you going to affect the image in post. The more CC and compo needs, the highest codec.
As the transcode time is the same for dnxhd…The way you want to use squeeze is a correct one. Better to just do qt references, way faster, and let squeeze doing the job instead of blocking Avid.
But keep in mind (this is a doubt I had and asked in this forum) that Avid does not automaticaly point to the highres material if you want to transcode from proxies. You have to conform first. It’s not a complain, logical and expected but it could have been different. In other
Words, the app does not take
Into account the hierarchy of the
medias, it just transcodes what
You give it.On Ama…big debate.
It sounds faster just ama and start
To edit. However, what’s faster
On the paper can become the big
Hassle very soon.
I use ama for storyboarding, reviewing.
For editing, I want dnxhd 36.
There is a reason for that: stability.
I can collapse an edit and work
With gazillion effects and tracks,
No freeze, no crash. No rendering.
When all that is booked, conform the
Sequence to the highres media.
If I did that with amaed avchd
Of even prores 444 from Alexas,
I’d need the Pentagon computer power.Same in a compo app. One do not
Just grab a codec material and
Ingest that into Nuke. No. It would
Work for simple tasks but if you
Want to do serious compo,
You want to feed Nuke with sequence
Of exr ir tiffs. Same with edits:
Serious edit requieres stability
And proxy workflow.
So Yeah, working with proxies
Always is more step,
But it’s worth.
And It’s even worth transcode
Your avchd footage into 2 flavours
Of dnxhd: One high-res and the proxies.
And that’s where ama is usefull.
Why doing 1 highres transcode?
Because avchd aint prores444.
It falls apart at the minimum CC.
Can’t be considered as a stable
Highres media.Fred.

Thanks Shane,
Yeah, it’s totally stupid to transcode to Highres from the 36. Never did that before.
But today, I came with this doubt on Avid implementation,
it could well have been possible that the app, would automatically pointed to the higher source file when it knows that the media you want to transcode from is of lower quality than the target.
I always thought it wasn’t the case, but you know…and if and…maybe.
That’s why I called my post “stupid doubt”.Fred.
-
Thanks Michael.
You confirmed my so-far practises.
In fact, I always thought it was like that, but I suddenly
had this moment of doubt, you know when we suddenly ask inside
“and…if…”Ahhh…the mind.
Fred.

Michael is right. Be carefull: the reso you imported will be the One exported from, unless you’re telling the app to re-link to the highres media (wich is not necesarly your source file). that’s for import.
I trust Ama to some limits, in fact, I prefer using avid’s highres and lowres medias and not the source file unless it’s a fully Avid’s native. More hassle first but less hassle later. But that’s just me.
As the refrain says: there is no one magic workflow but many.Fred.

Yeah, that’s what we do now until the #7 bring the support.
Got several fake LUTs (found from other avid users or created by me from scratch) in the end nothing more than a curve and as Michael points, it does the job for quick TA. It’s not 3D LUT but in the end it
Sort of works.
And yes, it’s putting the effect on a top track
And you’re good to go.Ps: not ideal, but it remains to be seen
The future implementation on 7.
Honestly, if it’s only for clients
Review, the current panorama works,
Because in the end, we’re likely
To end into a color app.
But if it’s to work within the app,
Implementation will be the key.
Let’s see what they’ll do.Fred.
