The CC interface in Avid has, imo, always Been weak.
It’s probably wiser that you CC in resolve for serious works.Fred.

But DS – MC already has a bigger potential as Smoke IMO.
Avid has the greatest stability if we feed it with what Avid wants.
And that’s because it’s Avid’house. Is the current fragmented situation works fine? Well, it ends to work fine…after awhile.
That’s the problem.Just look at the forums. There are
Plagued with roundtripping problems, even for people who are experienced so it’s not just
Wanabee issues.Again; I’m following you, but then, the implementation is key.
I agree that there is no super app that works really well for all, but it’s not a tech problem, it’s a politic one. IMO.

Pat, I got your point, but a myriad of fragmentated specialized apps is already what we have. And frankly, it has many many hassles within the roundtrippings.
Thank god we have people like M.Phillips who are working in the core of those metadatas crazyness and help gazillion of editors worldwide to solve issues that should not be issues.
The very bug problem of roundtripping, is the implementation. It’s too easy to
Mess-up.Don’t get me wrong, I’m not asking Avid to be Nuke. But Resolve enters IMO on the basic a 21 century editing app should feature, and Avid engineers are perfectly capable to do something as good if not better.
I’m not against a roundtripping betwewn Avid and Resolve, but how? With a 2 months learning curve and desperate call for help to M.Phillips at the minimum datas issues? I don’t call that modern World but a Holly mess.
I follow you on fragmentated apps, but not in the today’s implementation where it involves brand agreements etc…and in the end, we, users, are the ones on bondage.
How many lost hours (and money)
Have Been already lost by editors
Only on solving roundtrippings
Between the non-sense current
Mess? Just look at this forum,
Ir the Red forum. Thousand and
Thousand of hours lost in not
Doing the job, not being creative
But just making those myriad apps
Working minimally together. And wait…RAW video for everyone is just
On the corner, and if there is
Not an agreement on a standart,
You’ll see the fun.Fred.

David,
If you could post an image of the final look you want and your non-effect frame, iit would be much easier
To nail it.
For fx, image speaks better than any words.Fred.

In general, evolution+progress
Always tend to simplify, more efficiency, more integration, more universability, at less costs. For the moment, we are still in a transitional period and it’s the wild west.
Imo, the apps that will dominate the editing houses will be the ones that will be the less roundtripping dependancy at competitive cost.
Avid has a great card to play, but if they are not willing to dev DS anymore, they need to
Enhance MC where is the weakest. I’m thinking
Of CC for ex. Yes there is Resolve, but it really annoys me to have to roundtripp each time a CC is requiered Or reading Cinema dng etc…There are very good news on the #7, but also
Irritating lacks. The future is not to more apps but less apps,
One superapp that has it all.If MC would have serious color capabilities, why not effects in nodes, it would just have no rivals, even at twice the cost. That is what Symphony should be, the new DS, and not just a One more cool enhanced version.
Avid May well rule again the editing world because the platform is rock solid, but they need to listen to the young generation.

April 26, 2013 at 5:06 pm in reply to: How to export Apple Pro Res in Avid Media Composer 6.0.3.2The fact that prores had so much success is mainly due to the fact that it was the only option to handle the RGB from compo apps etc…
During some time, Apple that produces cool consumer equipments, became the dominant force of the entertainement industry, because of fcp. And it was well deserved. Avid was arrogant and expensive and Apple inundated the editorial houses, specially the small and middle size ones. But now, IMO, Apple has changed and deserves a serious kick in the ass. A codec that is almost a standart and no cross platform in 2013 is really not tolerable any longuer. I’n really sad for Aaton, they did the right thing with dnxhd, but they couldn’t get the camera attractive enough.
I really hope this industry will switch back to peecees in the future. It’s the caos, we need
Simplified workflows and cross-platform standarts.
Not One industry in the world
Would accept what actually happens
In motion imagery.
It’not normal that editors are
Spending 30% of their times
Dealing with solving formats
And roundtripping issues the
D.I.Y way instead of doing what
We are payed for: editing.Fred.

I’m more than pissed with Apple blocking the game on prores and that way, puts users on bondage with their hardwares that they are not even able to upgrade the macpros to the today’s standarts.
Not even talking about their funky
View on profesional nle with fcpx. That, combined with their wonderfull QT and what we got is the most ridiculous situation in any industry where everyone is using a brand that stopped to care of a niche it was leading, playing no clean games, and the cool factor starts to be less and less funny. Try One of those HP workstations and you’ll see. But on those HPs, no prores writting. Untolerable!
I’m really pissed with Apple.
And not the only one…Fred.

I’d avoid long GOP like the plague. It’s not going to make anything “smoother” in fast action. All it does is that it degrades the gop and makes post operations more chalenging, particularly critical in higher isos. Instead of film grain it’s an huggly soupe of artefacts.
I hacked My gh2 with I.frame and it’s way better. But you’d need at least 100 Mb/s. File size is about the double of a longGOP hack at the same bitrate, but image is of better robustness. There are IMO 2 things that
Should be removed by law
From the workflows: One is
Quicktime, and the other is
Long GOP.Fred.

Indeed. Transcode first at finishing quality according to Michael’s advice.
