    >As to getting a firewire card, I’ve tried running my camera into the firewire 400 and the external HD into the firewire 800 port, and >without success. This solution should, in theory work better than a port card.

No it shouldn’t! Both the 400 and 800 ports share the same firewire bus so they are fighting for the bandwidth. If you add a PCMCIA card you are creating another bus. However I think your problem is more related to the software upgrades. Go to this link.

    >I believe everything is connected correctly to my AJA, because it worked fine a couple of days ago and when I playback a tape in >the deck, I get playback on my studio monitors.
So that begs the question, what has changed since then?
Have you done any software upgrades?
    Added any other hardware?
If not, I would go to the AJA website and dowload the latest firmware and control panel.
Also try trashing your FCP preferences.

It sounds to me like you haven’t set your audio/video output correctly. In your audio/video settings, do you have the AJA selected as the output device for video and audio when you are trying to use it for playback of the timeline? What is feeding your video monitor, if you have one? How many of the audio channels are you using 2 or 4? When you say you get audio to play in your monitors from the deck, is that while it is hooked up to the AJA, i.e. the signal is passing through the AJA back to your mixer? When you switch over to firewire do you set your audio output to DV?

HAve you upgraded any software lately, like Quicktime?

Thanks for the input guys. I do have Graphics Converter, however I was hoping I wouldn’t have to go through the process of converting all these stills. Being that this project is not for broadcast I may just put up with the loss I will get in the mpeg2 compression for DVDSP.

  • >Yes, with version 2.0, you can remove the 3:2 pulldown from tapes that have it.
    Thanks, that’s good info.

  • I wasn’t aware that the IO was capable of removing a pulldown. How does it do that?

  • BTW Greg if you have a lot of clips in the timeline you want to select all foward from a certain point there is a tool to do that so you dont have to lasso them all. It is the “tracks foward” tool You can select it by hitting “T” on the keyboard or select it in the tool palette, 3rd tool down. There are 5 different versions of it depending on whether you want to select foward or backward from a certain point and whether you want all tracks selected or just the one you click on. It’s a very useful feature that saves lots of time in big sequences.
