Does the drive have 2 firewirwe ports? If so the connect your camera to the drive and then the drive to the computer. If your powerbook has a PCMCIA slot then you coud get a firewire card to go in the slot to add another bus and more firewire ports.

For serious input I would use a BNC connector rather than RCA 🙂

Peter that is not a mixer, it is a mixing control surface. It is really just an expensive mouse. There are no inputs for audio and no audio signal will pass through it. It is purely for controlling faders in your computer software program. Just hook up your mackie 1202 and as I explained and edit to your hearts content. If your are doing multitrack audio (like a lot of channels) in FCP and you want a control surface, to mix on the fly, then go for it. But from what you’ve said of your workflow so far that controller wont do you any good.

I understand the XLR v 1/4 inch, line and mic level and I didn’t mention Bal/UnBal. Anyway I would use the first 4 channels so as to have greater control over each channel of a stereo pair. However if you just want to turn one knob, then yes use the channels 5/6 &
7/8 inputs. BTW you are not eating up more input as it still requires 2 inputs for each device on the stereo fader inputs. -
Try the XLR’s and if the signal is too hot, then get some 1/4″ adapters.

Being that the 2800 has only 2 channels (if I remember correctly) then you could plug ch 1 & 2 out of the AJA into 1 & 2 on the mixer. Then plug 2 channels out of the beta into 3 & 4 on the mixer (no 1/4 needed there). Then you would take the main outs from the mixer to the inputs on the beta deck. Now you take the alt 3-4 outs from the mixer to the 1 & 2 ins of the AJA. (1/4″ adapters needed here). As I said before take the control room outputs to your amp/speakers. To digitize from the beta deck make sure the mute/alt3-4 buttons are pushed in on channels 3 & 4 on the mixer and that will send the signal to the alt 3-4 outputs of the mixer to your AJA channels 1 & 2 in. To monitor the AJA out signals, you just have to turn up ch’s 1 & 2 on the mixer. In the main section of the mixer under source select main mix or alt 3-4 if you want to listen to the beta deck. Now if doing a layback to tape you can turn your speakers up and down with the control room/phones volume knob without affecting what’s going to tape. Just make sure the assign to main mix button isn’t pushed in or you may get nasty feedback. Be sure to set your gain structure right with the trim knobs on channels 1 thru 4

In your log and capture window go to the clip settings tab and select 2 channels of audio. Then select if you want stereo or dual mono by clicking on the link to the left of the meters. Make sure the green buttons aren’t greyed out (off).

You dont NEED a mixer. You can go straight out of your AJA to your amp and then to speakers. However, the control you have to monitor different sources is limited. Also power amps should be run at full on the volume controls and then the level controlled from the source (normally a mixer). If all your equipment is routed through a patchbay, including the AJA, then you could get by without the mixer. After reading all the pros of having a mixer and it seems too complicated for you, just take your XLR outs from the AJA straight to the amp and be done with it. It just means repatching every time you want to monitor a different source. -
It’s a little difficult to point you in the direction of any wiring diagrams when the only info on equipment you have given is an AJA and FCP. Do you have any video decks? what type? A list of what you have in your suite and work flow, will make it easier to determine the best hook up for your mixer. I wouldn’t take the main outs of the mackie to the speakers, I would use the control room outputs.

I’ve never done it but you may be able to assign your own keystroke by creating scripts. Is that possible?
