Another option is to dump the P2 contents and last clip.txt file to a hard drive for storage and archive of the HD content then down convert (in camera) to a mini dv tape and then capture that into FCP for SD editing

Rent a varicam on friday afternoon for a one day rental that you will have ’till monday morning to return. Grab one of the HVX’s from the director, go for a drive into the desert and set them up side by side. Shoot the same footage at the same time, same frame rate etc. Bring that back and put them through the intended post workflow. ie. editing, outputing etc. then take the tape, DVD or whatever your output for the festival will be, to a small suburban theater that will rent to you for an hour in the morning before they open. IF you cant find a theater, shoot me an email. I have a friend with a screening room and I’d be interested to see the results.

The panasonic is a great field monitor and if you can afford one then by all means go ahead. If you need something cheaper then take a look at this sony. I just received mine and the picture is quite good and ample for checking focus etc but I only got it a couple of days ago so I’m still playing around with it. It has DVI, VGA, Component, S-video and composite inputs as well.

I have come across many editors that dont have any technical knowledge at all. One instance I recall an editor having to call in his assistant to bring up the timecode reader window on screen. Now in his defense he was an amazing editor. His story telling skills were great. So an editor does not have to be technically minded. That is why they should have assistants that can handle the technical and practical issues with their NLE’s. Editing is an art form. Yes there are many editors that can handle both.

I too am looking at this solution, more so as a way of going from a mixer to the camera via wireless. If you are going to use the lav mics, I would replace the actually mic with a higher quality one from Sennheiser like an MKE-2 or maybe something from lectrosonics if you can afford it.

There is an update. It is FCP 5.1 Although I dont know whether this was to fix the issue you are having as I haven’t heard of that before.

Also it may have something to do with the raid being a software controlled raid. i.e. if you striped it with your OS it is now using the OS which is on the drive to keep tabs of the raid it is on. Does that make any sense?
