  • Workflow with P2 and Varicam “can’t convert Varicam footage if P2 is present in Project”

This is a really ridiculous issue, I have shot 3-5 hours of HVX and Varicam Footage, All the footage shot on the P2 was shot in 24PN at different frame rates including 24, 36, 48 60. None of this footage needs converting because the camera does it on the fly and imports in the native frame rate. The problem is when I try to convert a selected clip shot on Varicam ( normal ) from 60P to 24, the converter randomly selects a “P2 clip” and tells me It can’t convert a clip I didn’t even select nor is it even 60P. I have tried making several different projects and that doesn’t help, the problem lies in the footage or the Program. I have even switched versions (different computers even) 4.5 to 5.01 to 5.04. They all seem to do the same thing when I try to work with P2 footage in the same project as Varicam footage and try to use the Frame rate converter(only on Varicam footage) .
I am not trying to convert anything that was not shot in 60p and I am not trying to convert anything shot on the P2.
My only answer right now is when I CUT all the P2 footage from the project, the frame rate converter will sometimes let me convert, If it doesn’t it will tell me I can’t convert a clip that has already been converted and imported into the project. My only other solution is creating a fresh project and importing the single clip I want to convert, this wastes time. I don’t have time, this really needs an update, Why can’t I work with P2 and Varicam footage together?
I don’t have a problem editing only converting.
This issue needs serious address, I am sure I not the only Pro with this problem.

Haven’t heard of this so not sure if it’s truly an issue. But one quick solution would be to organize the P2 and Varicam footage into seperate projects. Then once you’ve converted everything in the seperate projects move all the media into one project.

That is what I had to do. There isn’t any other way. I assume there is an embed within the Metadata of the P2 clips, creating this 24PN information within the project. Whether I try to convert a P2 clip or a Varicam Clip it gives me an error saying I cannot convert (0009HX) it is not 59.94 media. When trust me I would never try to convert a clip that is Natively a correct frame rate Shot at 60@ 24PN. Neither am I even selecting that clip to convert. Regardless of the clip I select it says I cannot convert the same clip every error (0009HX). I remove that clip from the project and it randomly chooses another clip to tell me it can’t convert. Maybe there is a fix in 5.1, I havn’t tried it at home yet on the X86.

There is an update. It is FCP 5.1 Although I dont know whether this was to fix the issue you are having as I haven’t heard of that before.

Of course I know there is an Update, But not for this issue, I have been working with this problem for a month now. Like Noah said, the only thing I can do is create Varicam only projects and import the clips into a P2 project or bring them both in after converting is done. But it is really annoying,

Opt-CLick or right click on the clip and select ITEM PROPERTIES. What does it say the frame rate of the clip is?

Ah I did not realize you did not have 5.1- that is an essential update for P2 footage. Not much else would be a more major help than to upgrade now.

Maybe you dont understand… I’m not an Idiot. I would not be here at Creative Cow for Pro’s if I didn’t know what Frame rate I was trying to convert. The problem is : It does not matter what clip I choose it will choose one for me and tell me It can’t convert it, I know this program very well. My original post has all the info for this issue. I am ONLY trying to convert Panasonic Varicam 59.94 footage to 23.98, and the FRC gives me an error saying I can’t convert the clip, the error message says a completely different clip than I selected. Basically I only shoot 24PN with the P2 at various frame rates. The Varicam is also various footage at 24,36,48 and Aerials at 60. When I remove the P2 footage from the project it will let me convert, Before i used the P2, in previous Varicam projects this has never been a problem, I could convert all day. Keep in mind I am not in any way trying to convert anything shot on P2. It’s done on the fly, so why? What is odd is that I select a 59.94 clip and then It gives me an error like I selected A P2 clip at 24P. go ahead try it yourself, you’ll see. this is a brand new OS and install of everything. I even have tried three different computers with fresh projects and varying versions of Final Cut. There is something wrong with the P2 footage.

Here’s what I suppose, what if I change all the clips, outside Final Cut, to straight Quicktime? And then I import and work with them ? so they only open in Quicktime?

I apologize if I sounded like I thought you were an Idiot. That was not my intention. I only mention that because I have tried to convert footage that I swore was 60p and was in fact 23.98. Sorry.

I have issues when trying to convert footage with the FRC that I solved by creating a brand new project, dragging the clip I want to convert into that project and then converting it. I can’t tell you why that worked for me, only that it did. And that was a recommendation from another Cow leader.

HOw did you capture the Varicam footage?

Also, the footage you need to convert needs to be at the root level of the browser, not in a bin. That’s why people will tell you to start a new project for your conversions.
