Be diverse and be everywhere.
If you expand your talent, you double and triple your opportunities. Move into other areas such as special effects or audio production. Chances are if you focus on these new talents as you have focused on your current talent, you’ll do great. Don’t see yourself as a stationary lake but as a vast ocean that touches many, many shores of options.
Work the web. You mentioned looking at production job work sites, well unfortunately you and thousands of others are doing the same thing. Getting on linkedin, youtube, vimeo, bliptv, facebook, twitter, everywhere you can have a presence, is key. There are millions of clients out there, literally, millions of clients. Worldwide. If you look only within your local radius you are getting a fraction of potential opportunities. Positioning yourself as an expert, here on the cow, on your blog and other places is also a good bet for attracting future clients.
I would also produce content, often. A podcast show, training tutorials, creative projects, etc..and then get it out to every part of your network. Virtually you’ll start to get a random passer-by, then a few more, then a crowd will form, then clients will follow, then demand will kick in. But you need to be producing. Kind of like a painter. Painters don’t go around telling everyone they are a talented and don’t have any buyers. They paint. And paint. And paint.
And remember this is show business. Most creative artists having a hard time don’t lack creative skills, they lack business skills. So read every marketing and business book you can.
And don’t listen to people complaining about the “down economy”…the creative arts business is one of the sectors that is booming, and the people doing really good are the people who are constantly reinventing themselves, hustling while others are sitting around worrying, working the virtual networks and web every which way they can, producing content that attracts an audience and envisioning success. Some roads are longer and some paths appear you may not expect, but the key with every journey is to keep moving.

The author does not have to do much and any percentage will be gravy. Focus more on conveying your passion to him for the project, get him swept up in the excitement, your excitement. He should be focused more on seeing it come to fruition (its great promotion for him) than getting a higher cut.

Social media does one thing very well, it amplifies and emphasizes your persona, your personality, your individuality.
I feel marketing these days is not about equipment or talent or skillset. Because with all the great tools we have now, just about anyone can get a copy of Motion and do dazzlng effects, get Acid Pro and make beautiful music, etc. As skilled as anyone is, there is someone else who can ramp up to your skill set. So what is the main difference? You.
Personality is taken for granted these days, but the truth is, you get more business if people like you, trust you, connect with you. Social media greases those wheels exponentially. Upgrading your circle of influence with social media is just like upgrading your equipment. Yeah you can get by with techniques and technology from 3 years ago, but lots of people may zoom past you.
Social networking you have to work it, the more you do it, the more muscles you can flex with getting your brand out there (the brand being you). Many creative artists have a website..which never changes. But they forget people are passing it often, checking in. Imagine a boss passing by an office where the worker is still and never moving. It’s like..what do they do all week? Social media allows a flow of info on what you are doing, organic information, projects, opinions, new info found, with a very personal twist.
Years ago I started my photography business and I was one of the first people in my area to shoot digitally. I breathlessly pitched the miracles of digital to clients, as opposed to my competitors “still shooting film”. I discovered something…they did not care about digital. They just wanted good pictures. And they chose me often over others, well, because they liked me. It was then I started drumming up the personal aspect, less the equipment, and its paved many great paths of success. Creative people are not wired this way. It’s often about the reel. But I discovered its more than that. There are a lot of rock stars on the Cow, you know their names. Sure they know the info, but the key is you know THEM because of their personality. And I think the Cow is already a powerful social network, yes adding some features would be cool, but I think its going great as is. Networks that are more focused can be uber powerful.
Getting back to social media…its just fuel to get you..as in YOU out there. As for my likes, myspace is pretty passed it prime, facebook is a great smaller network of friends, family and fans, more fun. But linked in and twitter are powerful ones to focus on if you have the extra time (not that any of us do). I’ve gotten a lot of work from linkedin and twitter as well, although twitter has connected me with global resources I did not know existed. I have friends who have tried social networks and it did not gel for them, that’s OK, I get that. But others I know who never dive in and feel “social networks..who cares..its just a big waste of time” are missing a real big picture.

It’s my current favorite show..so I hope it does come back..if it is canceled I will scream “Oh hell no!”
I was trying to describe the show to a friend recently who had not seen it, and the only thing I could come up with was “CSI meets Walt Disney”

Best bet is to Google “free 3d objects” (such as .obj and .3ds) and grab some to play around with. Once you load in an object, many items in the 3D menu become available.
In addition, go to the “Window” pull down menu and toggle on “3D” and you’ll get many panels full of options (the 3D window is off by default)
Also yes..you do need to load in a 3D object to start with.

The G5 takes regular old cheap PC RAM. When I had a G5 I would get PC memory at Best Buy when it was on sale. Some G5 units do not take advantage of faster memory within its specs, I did buy faster RAM but it listed/defaulted to a slower speed. It worked fine but just don’t spent extra on faster memory.

One way to do this is to create a title file with your grid and then keep it in your project bit. For a spot check just drag the title/grid over the footage
