Good point Ron. I always use my own server/domain for email. I only used gmail once, and it didn’t end well.
Several years ago I did a podcast called Rumor Girls, it was very popular and we had opened up an email rumorgirls@gmail.com for the show, like most shows. At some point our email got hacked into, we could no longer access it. We wrote to google and they confirmed the account had been hacked. They shut down the account “for our protection” and had “no further information”. We had all our show emails, fan info, email list, everything…poof. Gone.
Of course it was in “beta” then (did it ever leave beta?) and this was like around early 2008 (not too long ago actually) but the lesson was if it’s free, you don’t have much rights. Since then I have encouraged everyone to avoid gmail for professional use at all costs, even thought most people have their whole life in their google account.
Now maybe these days it’s a different story. But yeah..I am not a big fan of gmail…not even as an email dumpster 😉

All great advice.
I am VERY curious about spam arrest though. I looked into it years ago and research showed that it was not the best (like the company was actually doing spamming itself, there were better business bureau reports, etc.)
It was unfortunate because it sounded like exactly what I wanted, and fairly foolproof. Is the company better now? Anyone using it?
Like Ron said…it may be a lost cause to change my email…its been around so long people will still keep using the old one I am sure 🙁

Have not used Outlook in years, but I used to back up the PST file (just drag it to another device) as well as export out to Excel spreadsheet format, leaving me with a searchable database.

I am on Google Wave franklinmcmahon (@) googlewave.com so feel free to connect.
To be honest I played around with it when I first got on, but have not done too much with it. I think the learning curve (to really use it) will keep it in the realm of tech-peeps and early adopters for now. But there is potential there.

I would suggest personalizing it as much as you can based around the client. I’ve seen this dramatically increase approvals. Things like putting the clients logo on the sheet, writing so the client is not reading about your pitch but reading about their future show, forming the text as if the show is already happening. I find the more you sprinkle in these items the better. I just redid a bunch of my templates and proposals and scaled down the clinical talk and ramped up the personal. I even have sections which are me talking such as:
—
..the project will be completed in two weeks. Approval begins at the end of the month.Franklin: I feel that this new show has huge potential to extend your brand. Because your demographic skews younger, we are really looking forward to creating a package for you with a fresh new look. I have no doubt that…
—Stuff like that. Adding in personal stuff to make it less template-y. It may seem less professional but really you are just working to connect personally one on one with a decision maker. You want them to “really like your ideas and how you feel” as opposed to “I got the details and like the project outline”.
People hire you more often because they like you as opposed to talent. So it may be worth it to infuse more personality into printed materials.

October 30, 2009 at 1:32 pm in reply to: Possible handy web tool to check for copyright violations on your graphics: “tineye”Also this past week Google added “Find Similar Images” to its web image search. Now you can search for a photo/graphic and each graphic has a similar image link under it. The recognition algorithms work great, its fairly easy to find a graphic or photo that is yours used elsewhere on the web.

Royalty free these days is typically having a large mass of content and making money through small micro-payments that (hopefully) add up over time. It started with photography, then graphics and now audio. There are many sites with large libraries of low cost music (https://www.istockaudio.com and audiojungle.net to name a couple) and most producers I know just go grab a clip of what they need for a few bucks. I think the higher paying gigs would be more marketing the custom creation of music to clients. It would provide more value and produce higher returns then trying to compete in the sea of $3 audio clips so prominent on the web.

You need to adjust your income requirements to incorporate your added experience. A lot of creative people never factor in the experience that grows over the years. You are a more valuable person than you were last week, last month, last year.
Also sit down with a pad and decide how much you need to make to achieve the lifestyle you want. This result may mean moving to a new position, new company or shifting your career focus. But the key is to decide what you want to make and then work to make that income level happen. Many do it the other way, they decide well, that is all the market around here has to offer me. They have very long and rocky roads through their careers.
Also really start to sell your experience to others, write it up or do a demo, beef up your site, convey to everyone your many many hours, months, years of experience. A lot of it is wording. Once you start to change descriptions from “doing freelance for years” to “over half a decade of professional experience” people will take notice. The more you take your experience seriously, the more others will. Leading to higher steps in your career.
