  • Keep in mind title templates, its very easy to create and save templates with logos and titles in Premiere Pro CS3/CS4 for use on multiple projects.

Looks pretty cool..I am uploading one now. I remember when linkedin recently went from no pics to avatar pics..it was like night and day…suddenly there was much more of a connection with seeing the person’s face than just all text..so I think its a good idea. Hopefully the Star Wars pics will be kept to a minimum.

I would not go 64-bit..no huge advantages that I can see. Also I assume if you are doing intensive audio and video work and you want to work on windows, just reboot into Vista via bootcamp.

Ideally though since you have a new mac look at some of the mac audio and video programs. Sonar is great but investigate Logic Studio. It’s a huge suite for a low price that will run natively (its a fast program too) and it’ll do everything sonar does.

October 29, 2008 at 11:54 am in reply to: Grad School?

I’d have to say knowing those tools is compelling, but learn design before all else. I get demos sent to me often and the media artists who know design really stand out. The color theory, invisible grids, kerning, typography, all the elements that make visually appealing and well designed content is what I gravitate towards.

To answer your question, editing I think improves by doing more and more of it. Special effects usually entails going to the manuals. It may sound boring but go through the AE manual for example, there are so many features and elements, the more you know the better. And look at the whole marketplace, look to game development for example, a huge industry always looking for talented effects artists. School is beneficial of course but self teaching on current programs is key. Set aside an hour, maybe two, per day totally devoted to training. It adds up week to week.

September 28, 2008 at 2:19 pm in reply to: Launching Motion

Go up to the top Spotlight search (on the right on the mac desktop) and type in Motion. Launch it, and when its running right click on the dock icon and choose “keep in dock”. Then slide the icon left or right to put it in the slot you want.

September 28, 2008 at 2:14 pm in reply to: Any techniques on “closing the deal”?

The easiest way to close a deal…is to close it.

Meetings are good and there are many techniques, listed here and elsewhere. But a common problem is people don’t ASK. After the whole pitch its more like “so think about it” as opposed to “when can we start”.

The secret of getting everything you want in life, is ask.

Same goes for business. Fine tune your pitch, get face time, be confident but at the end always close the deal and be direct. We’re raised to be polite and nice, but sales and business is another issue, so always ask for the deal. 🙂

September 28, 2008 at 1:55 pm in reply to: Office/studio space?

Wanting to make clients comfortable is something you mentioned and it is the most important. Basically nothing will happen until the point. The perception should be that once a client arrives for a meet, everything stops and the focus is on them. So its always good to have a separate room like a conference room, that is quiet, well designed with accomplishments (awards, etc) displayed. A well designed room conveys trust and confidence, which goes a long way to not only making the deal but keeping the client.

In my years as a creative director, I discovered that it was no accident that the better the meeting place, the better deals we’d land. Some boutiques have meetings “on the floor” which seems more hip but its more distracting.

You are of course focused on studio and lights and things, but really my best suggestion would be really putting a lot of thought into how and where you will interact with clients once they arrive for a meet. There is a whole art to it (from the initial greeting, offering a beverage, starting on time, outlining objective of meet, etc) and its worth really focusing on.

September 28, 2008 at 1:20 pm in reply to: AE to Flash without Flash

Swish is one of the most popular:
    https://www.swishzone.com/index.php

I like to search for Flash programs in Google and then watch the ads on the right. Even if you get to some of the websites that feature Flash programs, there are numerous Flash competitors listed typically. Its an easy way to find out what is usually the most popular.

Also if you are mainly wanting to use video, you could get away with a program like Episode.

September 15, 2008 at 8:38 pm in reply to: importance of human relations in marketing?

Not very important. Marketing is typically creating emotion around a product to make it more accessible or digestible. Makeup for example is not selling a jar of colored paste, its selling a whole new, sexier you.

The web has moved to more people marketing, you are the brand. This works only if you are a compelling brand.

The other thing is networking, making personal connections, those are always better in person. A phone call is better than email, in person is better than a phone call.

Anyway to answer your question, its not very important, if done correctly marketing is not about the sales person selling themseleves but getting the buyer to think about themselves and how the solution is going to make them happier. That can be done with no human interaction.

I just heard the news and wanted to express my deepest sympathies for your loss. I don’t know what to say except that my prayers are with you.

This loss is sad because you are indeed an architect of building families, but I’ll remind you that your family is larger, extending worldwide, and has more love in it then you’ll probably ever know. And we’re all here for you.
