October 1, 2008 at 3:08 pm in reply to: RED footage on M100

[Bryon Middleton] “I have the newest download of RED Alert. I was curious of what setting I should be using when rendering to get the best quality. Which Debayer Quality, Which Codec will work for me and be the highest quality? “

The highest quality would be Uncompressed 10 bit, which usually is overkill due to its heavy performance requirements in HD. I would recommend using ProRes HQ in 1920*1080 for most projects (if you are planning to master to a HD format; for a 2k DPX workflow you would do that in a different way).

You definitely should check that you are working in Rec709 gamma, and you should do a light color/brightness adjustment there to make sure you don´t clip or waste any color and luminance info during the conversion.
If you want to batch-process your clips, you should have a look at RedRushes, which actually allows you to do convert a series of clips into the format of your choice.

Framerate depends on your shooting framerate, but most of the time probably will be 24fps (if you are planning to go to Film) or 23.976 if you are working for video delivery.

September 29, 2008 at 6:18 am in reply to: corrupted bin file

Have you looked into your backup folder? You can set up Media 100 to do backups of your bins as well as your timelines, so if that is turned on on your system you should be able to find the backed up bins in your backup folder.
On the other hand, I think I never had a corrupted bin with Media 100. The only time a bin would not open was when there was a damaged media file in this bin. Have you tried to open the bin with your media files offline (e.g. create a new project and open the bin in this project with “relink media” turned off)?

September 28, 2008 at 4:44 pm in reply to: Help me spend $15,000

[Eric Ruff] “If my budget is $15K, can that cover the computer, hard disk storage, camera, and software? I guess I can still use my 23” Cinema Display, but that about all that is salvagable. I’d like to be shooting and editing in HD, but not for real movies; this will all end up on DVD.
    “

You definitely can manage it easily with your budget depending on which format you need for shooting; but you also can spend 3x your budget (and more) on a camera alone. If I had to decide on a camera I would have a good look at the Sony EX1 and EX3 cameras as well as on the HDV lines, to find the one that fits your needs.

    September 28, 2008 at 4:42 pm in reply to: 8.2.1a + QT 7.3 + OSX v10.?.?

[Maxwell Federman] “Can I install the 8.2.1 directly without having to install v7 first? Dual boot for OS9 would be a pain. All of the serial numbers (install keys) are here. I will ask the seller to formally have the system license signed over if possible.
    “

If you have the encryption code for V8.2, go to the Media 100 support website, download V8.2.3a and install this. No need to install OS9 or V7 first. But you have to have the V8.2 code; the V8 encryption code does not work for V8.2, only for V8.0 and 8.1.x.

You most likely have a bad render file on your HD. Sort your files on your media drive by creation time and look if you have a new render file in your media folder. If yes, open it in QuickTime player and have a look if it seems to be okay. If not, delete it.

If this does not work, you can open up your timeline with your media files offline (e.g. with your media RAID turned off, or with a new project with Relink Media turned off in the prefs). Then move the CTI to a different position on your timeline, save and quit, take your media back online and reopen your project.

I never have seen this. What format/framesize/codecs are you using? Does the wipe render correctly, or does the problem also appear in a rendered wipe?

September 20, 2008 at 9:15 am in reply to: offsite Client Video Editing Review

[Greg Jones] “Has anyone out there heard of a solution where I can be editing on my computer and sending the video and/or screen output to a client in another state?
    “

One thing you could look into is a streaming video solution, like QuickTime Broadcaster/QuickTime Streaming Server. But these things are not easy, you would need an external computer with a video input and a somewhat decent internet connection to actually stream video from your system. The desktop remote solutions or even e.g. the solution Media 100 uses to do their webinars is not enough to do real live streaming with a decent framerate.

September 20, 2008 at 9:13 am in reply to: QuickTime 7.5.5 update (PLEASE READ)

[Vegar Aase] “Do you know where i can find it?
    Or another way out?
    Thank you! “

    Hi Vegar,

please read this thread, where Wick from Media 100 did a summary of the necessary steps to get back to a working system setup, including the direct download links for the software you need. And make sure that you have downloaded the correct QuickTime version for your OS, otherwise your system will not boot anymore!!!

[Jack Shepard] “With the Final Cut integration, I assume we will be open the project in Final Cut and create an OMF from there?”

I haven´t actually tested the OMF export from FCP, but since the timelines transfer over to FCP smoothly I don´t see a reason why you shouldn´t be able to export OMFs from there.
