November 15, 2011 at 11:44 am in reply to: What is the best way to retrieve Media 100 V8.1 files today? If you get the Trial version, it should open the V8.1 timeline with its clips just fine. The one thing that makes me suspicious, though, is the fact that you cannot view all of the QuickTime files after installing the Codecs. The clips should play back in QuickTime player correctly, as long as your system is either below 10.6.8 or at 10.7.2 (there is an issue with QuickTime codecs in 10.6.8, 10.7.0 and 10.7.1).

November 14, 2011 at 10:21 am in reply to: Choosing a Mac Pro & Card for a 4k-ready v2.1 installThe tutorials were done on a newest Generation MacPro with 8 cores+HyperThreading, with 8GB of RAM at the time of the recording. But I also have edited Red footage on my MacBook Pro (last generation), which actually worked nicely, as well as on a 3 year old MacPro. Of course the newer the system the quicker the rendering times for conversions; but depending on your project and the way you tell a story you don´t need too much rendering at all, especially since you can start editing with the Red files immediately.
Of course if you do complex sequences with many layers you will get into rendering, and depending on your needs probably a RedRocket card would be a good investment then. But if you don´t need to render much during your “regular” editing, this will not change much with Red footage (until you finish your movie/export it/master it to tape or whatever)
I would suggest that you search for some R3D clips on the web and give it a try for yourself to get an idea how well this works.

November 13, 2011 at 4:53 pm in reply to: Most recent AJA Kona LHi driver that works with media 100 Suite v2.1 running on OS 10.6.8?The 9.0.5/9.0.6 drivers do work with Suite 2.1 on 10.6.8; the 9.1 driver does not. So if you want to upgrade to the 9.0.5 version (9.0.6 for LHi) you should be good to go.

It somewhat depends on what you want to deliver. But usually I would up convert to 1080, especially with the huge part of the footage being 1080 already.

This sounds like a mixed codec timeline. Most likely your source material is one format, your render codec is something else (e.g. Media 100 i and ProRes). Since they are in different colorspaces when being decoded to RGB by QuickTime, they do not match.
If you want to avoid that you either need to work in only one codec/codec family, or you need to do a QuickTime export to a codec of your choice.

November 3, 2011 at 10:11 am in reply to: Random glitches when rendering in Media100 Suite 2.1 & RED 5Wow, interesting. What format do you use (HD/SD, framerate)? I guess this is just a static title?

Are these files already in a Media 100 supported codec, so that they should fast-import? Or are they in a codec that requires a transcode/slow import? And since you say that this happens with Suite 2.1, did this work with an earlier version or is that a new workflow which you started with Suite 2.1?
I don´t know the server system you are using, and usually we don´t work from AFP servers that often. But when we do it usually works as expected, at least from our MacOSX Server system. Maybe there is something unusual going on with the AFP support of your server… -
As I said, if you have DVDSP, you most likely also have Compressor. Then you would be much better off by doing the conversion to MPEG2 directly in Compressor, since you have much more control over the result than in DVDSP.

How are you going to broadcast? Tape or file delivery?
If you have DVDStudioPro, you most likely will also have Compressor, which can do good conversions from HD to SD; or you could conform your timeline in Media 100 Suite to SD (or work in a SD timeline with your HD footage in Suite 2 and up). If you need to go to Tape you simply could play out a SD version; either via the hardware conversion or with the Software transcode.

I only now realized that you want to go into Premiere and not AE CS 5.5 with the clips. Not sure which formats are natively supported by Premiere. But I would guess you can export a “Animation” codec clip from Media 100 that should be readable by Premiere. Try exporting a short segment in Media 100 as QuickTime->Animation codec with highest quality settings. V8.1.1 is several years old, and I am not sure which codecs were supported back then. Not sure why Premiere does not read DV files, though.
