Are you using crash record? This is not frame accurate. Only “Insert Edit” and “Assemble” is supposed to be frame accurate, and has been for us always. Which deck are you using? Is your decks capstain lock set to 4FD or 8 FD set accidentally?

[Wayne V.] “The s-video line (even though its being converted from digital to analog a) gives you proc amp control on input and b) is upconverted to 4:2:2 color space. This is a little misleading because there still isn’t “enough” color to do real high end compositing, but you might see a little difference if you pull a chromakey from the s-video signal. “

Actually the Media 100 i FireWire input is also upsampled to 4:2:2 when the signal moves into the Media 100 codec chip. Everything inside Media 100 i (unlike HD or sw) is in the “native” Media 100 i codec, which is 8bit 4:2:2 independant of which input you do use. But uprezzing a 4:1:1 (or 4:2:0 signal) does not make much sense unless you recompress it (e.g. for effects, transitions, anything that needs to render). A keyer does not gain anything from converting a signal recorded at 4:2:0 into a 4:2:2 or 4:4:4:4 signal.

The current beta version of Media 100 sw does not allow digitizing of Media files using FireWire; this functionality is still under development. But you can use material digitized by iMovie, FCP, Media 100 i, 844/X and other tools. Probably the next beta version will support FireWire I/O.

[Jerome Robbins] “I have made some 1 minute sample videos for my website. In the past I exported a program and then used Cleaner5 to compress for Quicktime and WinMedia versions. “

Cleaner 5.1.2 does run under OSX. You can download it from Discreet

If you have disconnected your breakout box lately, have you looked if there is a bent pin on the connection cable? This happens easily and is the most likely source of a missing signal. And you should check the output of the beta and the cables to be sure that it is a Media 100 problem. Maybe the Media 100 hardware test does detect an error…

[Bob Johnson] “At the moment the unit is set up as 4 x raid5 slices (2 on each controller). “

Why have you done that? I doubt that this is helpful for the performance. How many drives are per RAID5 stripe? 3 with one as hot-spare? Probably this causes your performance problems. If you don

Are you using the latest Firmware and drivers for the ATTO card? And how are your XServe RAID drives initialized? You should create 2 RAID5 sets (one for each channel) across all drives on the channel, and then stripe them together with RAID0 to create a RAID50 set.

  • [GSW video] “If I install this new codec and don’t uninstall the “Media100 Codec.component” will I encounter problems? This stuff makes me nervous because I just got all this new software and Tiger loaded on this G4 and I don’t want to run into problems when projects and deadlines come up”

You should encounter no problems except faster rendering times in AE 😉 Move the codec.component to the desktop and install the software codec (you need to move the codec.component anyway if you want to encode MPEG2 files). If you see problems (you should not) move it back. The software codec is MUCH quicker and MUCH more stable than the hardware codec…

  • Take a look at this document. There more or less everything is explained and still true for DVDSP4. I would suggest installing the software codec to lower rendering times and to avoid problems. Then you don

Which version of Media 100 and which OS are you using? The memory management is only available under OS9. When do you get the error message? When opening the master to tape window? Have you tried copying your clips (or parts of your clips) from your timeline into a new timeline and to master this to tape?
