You can export a Self-contained clip from sw (very fast) and a audio mixdown and import that into Media 100 i for mastering. The question is how often you have to do that and how much you want to spend. HD obviously has the benefit of seeing your video on a video-monitor all the time, but it costs some money to get the hardware. Probably I would try the workflow with sw and if this works for you, fine. If not you should probably start thinking about a HD system, since this will make I/O tasks much easier.

October 21, 2005 at 1:26 pm in reply to: Sluggish UI after switching to MacOSX 10.2.8 And M100 8.0.1You definitely should upgrade to V8.1.1 (free) or to V8.2.2 and the corresponding OS/Quicktime version from the CPG. Many things have been speeded up there. Plus, some more RAM (at least 1.5GB) will help also. But overall your CPU is not the fastest machine under OSX, so you probably will not get the OS9 speed. A dual1GHz system is the minimum I would recommend for Media 100 on OSX; a DualG5 will be even much faster.

[Lawrence Marshall] “I’ve tested this over and over… looks like 2-3 frames are clipped off the tail end of the dissolve (the outgoing scene dissolving down into the incoming scene). *All* the time”
This is a known bug, and I think it will be fixed in the next version. Realtime FX are okay, but there is a problem in the rendering algorythm.

[Peter DeArmond] “For me, and I’m a strange duck, it’s not for HD that I want the Media100 HDX card, it’s for the reatime SD capabilities. For a new long project I will be doing almost all green screen work, and I saw how well realtime alpha channels performed at the demo I attended last year. That means using the HDX card.”
All realtime effeccts (except HD up/downconversion) is done on the CPU, and so the realtime performance on sw and HD is identical on identical CPUs. All compression/decompression, keying, moving alphas and everything is CPU based.

October 18, 2005 at 12:56 pm in reply to: help using Firewire drives on G4 with m-100i XR 7.0.3[Wayne Grauel] “You cannot use firewire drives as media drives. As i understand it, There is a conflict with the Media 100 DV option that precludes using firewire drives as media drives. The system locks up and you must reboot. “
As far as I can remember the conflict is not with the DV option but with the HDRFX board (the realtime effects board). And I guess that adding a FW board does not change anything there.
Installing a SATA or Ultra ATA 133 board would be an option and the drives should be pretty much fast enough to deliver 300k/frame data rates. But I would recommend an SATA interface, since they are relatively cheap and some can also be used for external SATA storage as well.

Nothing. You should be able to open them directly without installing anything additionally. If they don

Right now it is not there to download. I guess that this is related to the Boris merger and that it will be up soon again.

October 14, 2005 at 8:42 pm in reply to: MEDIA 100HD horrible compression quality? What’s going on?[Michael C.] “Why should the technology be going backwards? Why should the Media100HD drop working features that have already been perfected in their past products? This is a programming oversite, and one that I should not be expected to just “deal with”.”
The problem is, that although you maybe “should not be expected to just deal with” you obviously have to deal with it. There is some functionality that did not migrate from Media 100 i to HD, and obviously the “Draft” compression for Media 100 i codec is one of them. Unfortunately this functionality seems to be important to you, but not to many other users. And since decisions have to be made which features get implemented into a new system and which not, it seems that not enough people thought that this “Draft” compression would be important these days. There are other examples, like the audio out functionality where you could use the Media 100 i outputs under OS9 for system sounds that never made it to OSX, or the fact that with the Media 100 i hardware you could watch files from QuickTime player on your SDI screen. Or the S-Video connectivity. Or…
So while it may be “not acceptable” for you that this Draft compression is not included I tried to help you find ways to work with your system. Maybe I did tell you to “just accept the fact that it will cost me 5X more $$ for storage…”, but just because it is your only choice right now. If you have other ideas how to handle it, no problem, do it as you like.
As you may know I
