This is a 2-part solution to your problem, and it depends on the codecs you are using.
First, you have to “interpret” the incoming clips correctly, telling the system what field order the clip has (which lines are forming the first field and which ones the second). To do that, select your footage in the Project window, right-click them and select “Interpret Footage”. There you will see a selection for “Separate Fields” where you can choose “upper field first”, “Lower field first” or “Off”. Most NTSC footage is lower field first, but it depends on the codec you are using.
If your footage is interpreted correctly you also have to render in fields back into your codec. When having set up the render in the render Queue, make sure that in “Render Settings” Field rendering is also set to the correct field order. Then you should get correct rendered interlaced footage. -

Anytime there is quick movement in the rendered video…someone running by or a quick head turn the video looks like it is tearing or shearing…rather than a nice smooth movement.
Anyone had this problem?”Are you seeing this tearing on an interlaced monitor/CRT? Or on a TFT/Plasma? Are you seeing it in AE or Media 100? Are your clips field order interpreted correctly in AE (usually done automatically)? What is your comp size in AE (PAL 720*576 or NTSC 720*486, or something else)? Which codec are you rendering into?

I would export by reference to save space (if you are encoding on the same system), but overall yes.

which OS/QuickTime/Media 100 HD version are you using, and which kind of material and codec? I have never seen that happening on any Media 100 HD version, and when testing that on V11 it worked without the problems you describe. -
This seems to be a common problem; DVD recorders with FireWire inputs seem to act differently than cameras/decks, so Media 100 cannot establish a connection to them. Don

QuickTime usually handles aspect ratios not very well. One option would be to pass it through AE to create a square pixel 16:9 file there. But I would check back with the client; if they are encoding it to Flash video anyway they can do the aspect ratio correction there.
Animation at full resolution would be a good source for Flash Video encoding.

This probably is from a “wrong” pref inside Boris Graffiti. In earlier versions it ws necessary to turn on “better Quality field rendering” inside the Graffiti preferences, which should fix your rendering problem.

Yes, this is a problem with Media 100 sw in combination with Media 100 i. But since you know the reason for this bug (gaps/black frames) it would be easy to avoid it until it get fixed. Exchange between sw and HD is immediately anyway.

Picture quality of the new systems is even better than the one of Media 100 i; e.g. you can work in 10bit if you need the extra color details.
