If you bought V11 (and also if you bought a new Aja-based system) I think you most likely also bought 1 year of software updates as part of the package. So if you bought V11 as part of the platinum software update package you should get V11.5 (including the new encryption code) for free.

Additionally I think Media 100 V11.5 is for the HDx hardware systems also, not only for the Aja-based systems. So if you have an “older” HD system you can run V11.5, too.

The best thing would be not to work in 640*480 at all. I know this is probably not the advice you want to hear, but if you do have a P6000 board there is no reason (except for legacy footage) not to work in 720*486.

Yes, in RAID 50 both sides should show lights. They indicate the amount of cache used, so I would check the cache settings on both XServe Channels. And make sure that you have turned on the “realtime Features” messages under the “Titles & Effects” prefs. I

There definitely is a difference between stuff encoded with BitVice and recorderd on Standalone recordes. Both have their advantages for some cases. The standalone recorders are obviosuly quicker, and we use them for a lot of client review discs. We produce several hours of TV-shows each week, and most of them go through 2 steps of client approval before going to the TV station. These previews are recorded to standalone recorders, since the content (plus the speed of delivery) is much more important than the image quality. Since the final shows get reviewed on DigiBeta or HDCam anyway before sending them out the quality of the DVD recorders is really enough there. Previously they got VHS tapes, so DVDs are obviously an improvement.
We did produce several commercial DVDs, and of course these are encoded via BitVice. But it seems like your BitVice encoding times are somewhat high. For SD source material we usually get ~3-4x realtime results with BitVice (3 to 4 hours for encoding one hour of material). So six hours for 15 minutes seems to be very high. There is no Media 100 i codec for the PC. If your friend would run one of the newer Media100 systems you could use many standard QuickTime codecs. For Media 100 i you should use Motion JPEG B in the correct resolution (640*480 or 720*486 NTSC, 768*576 or 720*576 PAL) and the correct field order. Ask your friend which resolution he uses. The Media 100 i codec is based on MJPEGB, so the quality should not suffer when importing it into Media 100 i, but depending on the length of the clips it will take some time to transcode.

You should think about getting Media 100 sw or the new Media 100 Producer for this. The “old” Media 100 i systems do all their decoding/encoding on the P6000 board, which was very efficient some years ago, but today with the performance of modern computers it is much quicker to do it CPU-based.
