There’s no problem with the .mov file, I can export the multiple audio channels and so on. I already tried with the setting you suggest, but nothing changes. If I export the same sample using the 4:3 or the 16:9 pixel aspect ratio, the exported file fill show 4:3 in Quick time or on the timeline. This is a screenshot of the settings in compressor:

Yes, it’s normal you see it that way. However, you should select the exported clip in the timeline, go to the inspector window, and check the “audio” tab. You should see it marked as “2 stereo”. Now if you want to quickly check contents and levels, you can check or uncheck one of the pairs in the “channel configuration” in the inspector window. If you want to operate to each single channel, you need to break apart clip items and turn the “stereo” into “double mono” inside the inspector. Now you have four single tracks on the timeline. You can address them again into a double stereo set using the roles and exporting again in case you need.

I had a similar problem some time ago. I think I did not uninstall properly a previous trial version, or possibly a regular version, so the app was showing as greyed out in the apple store and it could not be downloaded again even if it were not among the apps. I downloaded and used the Digital Rebellion uninstaller, checked FCPX only, and I did not solve the problem. So after some more try I uninstalled again checking the “shared files” as well. After that FCPX showed as downloadable from the App Store again, and I could have it up and running.

Assuming you already own an external fast array for the media you currently work on and a set for safe storage for archiving, depending on how much media you work on, my fist step up would be a double large monitor setup. Desktop space is never enough. When I’m on a trip gathering material and rough cutting it on my MBP I find it very limiting. When I’m back in my office and transfer everything on my MP with two large monitors, everything looks nice and clean and I can read clip’s notes and have a real grip on the event browser.

I already like and use the keywords a lot. However, I need a more “nested” way to visually individuate clip within a keyword defined macro category. I find it very helpful to sort the clips in sub-collections (my main line of docs is some kind of travel chronicles), so that when I inspect a smart collection with the clips sorted by date, I can go past the meaningless naming FCPX sets and have a hint of what logical and timed sector the clips belong to. So, under the “Out of the water footage” keyword collection I can define time ranges like “packing bags”, “driving to destination”, and so on, keeping the main smart collection view so that I don’t really need to sub define each clip. I know I can apply multiple keywords and use combined sets, but I think it gets a bit complicated. BTW, if I am not doing something wrong, it seems I can’t use the timeline index or select the timeline clips and mark them as “used” or “unused” in the browser in one of the editable columns.

Well, not really.
What I’d like to be able to do is adding the same note to multiple clips, like I was in FCP7. It’s a feature I used a lot. In FCP7, in one of the “comment” columns (there were two, if I remember right, plus another column that could be used for the same purpose), I could select a few clips at the same time, ctrl-click on the column on the line of the clip I wanted to apply the text to, write the description, and it would apply to all the selected clips at once. Right clicking or ctrl-clicking on the column would bring up a window with all the already applied text descriptions, making it easier and faster to tag more clips. It was also very useful to reveal used clips. I could use the “find” tool, look for the used or unused ones, and then apply the desired tag that would stay visible. Unless there’s something I am missing, it seems there’s only one notes column in FCPX, and I can’t apply the text to multiple clips at one (f.e., “driving to Cartagena” or “preparing for dinner”). A workaround could be batch renaming the clips in the event browser, but it would not be the same.

My guess is yes.
There are a lot of different flavors in the “professional editors” container.
Professional means one is earning his own living doing something, so it could be a guy hired to edit on a director’s note in a large facility were audio is going to be sent to another facility and the same goes for color and so on, but also a guy working as free lancer on weddings and events, or an infinite amount of other niches where some paid video work of any kind is involved. Myself, I run a one man shop, as a director/cameraman/editor….., specialized in outdoors documentaries that are broadcasted by an important satellite tv network. Coming from former versions of FCP, my first reaction was angry, maybe more emotional than else, seeing I could not import projects from FCP/ (guess what happens if a new Word does not allow you to open .doc or .docx documents), that everything had been somehow messed up, that I was lacking a lot of features that I needed, that clips were named in a not meaningful way so that I could not really use them outside of FCPX…. Then, after the latest update, I decided I wanted to jump the gun and really try, since I could not stay with FCP7 forever, and that I was sure I did not want to go back to a Windows based editing system. So I bought a couple of Ripple Training tutorials and there I went with two brand new paid documentaries on a short time term delivery. I can say that, for my line of work, the FCPX is really good. Skimming is precious, as is the ability to work on the timeline while importing or building an archive. The magnetic timeline is something I got to like after a while, and I consider the ability to work or at least archive files that are not huge sized as pro res is great. There are still some things I don’t like, some things I think are missing, and some I maybe still have to learn or get used to, but at the moment I am certain I can work faster in FCPX. Not faster because I can skip a few clicks here and there or use a shortcut, as in my line of work that time is not relevant, since I direct while I edit, but because I can move through the media faster and better. Even if I had to click three times instead of one to achieve the same result, it would still be nothing for me. Using keywords skimming and metadata organization to find the clips I need among one hundred really makes a difference. Of course the inertia of a large editing facility is huge compared to a small one in terms of money, of time and so on, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of small facilities/freelance editors would end up adopting FCPX very soon, and it would be a lot of licenses. I guess if the first release was a bit different, and if a lot of people who had not even really tried the sw did not release bad reviews (not that the first releases did not deserve it), together with people who tried it and thought it was not for them, the licenses would be many more.

Thank you, problem solved. Everything is up and running now. I did not know the name of the command was “Override connecyions”, so I was searching on a command showing a “tilde” key in the command list before setting it to another key. Searching with the right name it showed up, not connected to any key. At first the system refused to attribute the command to the key in the same position of the “tilde” (a backslash in an Italian keyboard) as it was part of a default set and reserved to FCPX, then I could make a duplicate and make it work. I think it is a very useful tool!

I went through the whole set of custom commands and no grave or tilde key appears. On FCP7 I could change the keyboard layout from within the application and set it to US so that I could use the standard shortcut. I can’t find something of the sort in FCPX.
