  • I am not sure what the command name is, I gave a look at the custom commands but I have not found something that could sound like that “temporary unchain” or similar.

Maybe it wasn’t set by design, meaning it was not designed that way on a purpose. More likely, it’s just something that was not noticed. I am really loving the software that seems perfect for my needs. The skimming, the media organization that I hated at the beginning together with the magnetic timeline, the ability to deal with original formats and lots more are making my projects much faster to finish. However, going deeper in actual real life use, I am finding there’s still something that would need some fixing or adjustment. Maybe I still haven’t got acquainted enough with the audio section (today I bought the Ripple Training about audio), but my impression is that it’s not at the same level with the video.

If you want to override the wrong interpretation of the field dominance you need to select the clip in the Browser. Then you open the inspector, if it isn’t already. Now click on the “info” tab on top of the inspector window. Bottom left of the same window, open the pop up menu and then check “settings view”. Now you should be able to choose “upper first” in the “field dominance override” options.

January 16, 2013 at 7:29 pm in reply to: Wait for the new MacPro or get the new iMac?

If one already owns a MacPro and 2+1 displays, which I think is actually the most common situation among professional editors, so that one can use the PCIe esata and HDMI output cards, the drives and the external non thunderbolt enclosures and arrays that he’s using moving them to a new 2012 MP, it could end up being even cheaper than the iMac, if I am not missing something:
    MP 2012, 2×2,4 Ghz Xeons, 12 cores, 32Gb RAM, top GPU: E. 4901,00 https://store.apple.com/it/configure/MD771T/A?
iMac 27″ i7, 32Gb Ram, top GPU, Pegasus G4 external Thunderbolt RAID, external Thunderbolt 2xPCIe adapter, about E. 5710,00. One could go for a cheaper FW800 or esata to use with the adapter, but anyway it would be about the same price at best, not much cheaper, and I think an external FW would not be the same as the internal RAID the MP offers. I am considering that option….

I just found that after you work on the double mono tracks, adjusting levels, cutting out background noise, equalizing, etc, if you modify the channel settings back to stereo, you lose everything. So is not like checking or unchecking “stereo pair” on FCP7.

I’m wondering about the same option, but if I decided to buy a top notch iMac, I would end up spending something like 3.200,00 Euro. I should then add an external RAID array. It should be as quiet as possible and at least 6Tb to equal what I have inside my MP now and to fit my needs. Maybe a Thunderbolt one, since FW800 and eSata are not present on the latest iMacs. A Pegasus G4 is about 1760,00 Euro. Then I would need a box to continue using all of my esata enclosures, RAID arrays and cards like the Intensity Pro and Sonnet Tempo. About 750.00 Euro. Total money: about 5710.00 Euro. If a new MP would come out with internal storage slot and PCIe slots, maybe it would not be much more expensive. Since my early 2008 MacPro seems to handle my current workflow with no particular problem, I think I’ll still wait for a while. If quiet and reliable single drive external quick swap Thunderbolt enclosures were available, that would possibly be a cheaper option (no RAID array but a few sparse disks and just a couple of adapters instead of a pcie box).

Thank you Mathieu. I followed your advice and it works. I had done something wrong in the first test and panning left-right the two mono channels had given me no results, it’s fine now. In FCP7 I used to unlink audio and video, break the stereo pair, and then work on each single stereo track without further steps, and each would naturally retain its pan position. All in all, this is not much different.

    Kind regards

I noticed wearing my headphones that if I change the channel configuration from “stereo” to “dual mono” I lose the left/right separation, and both the tracks play on both channels. I don’t like it, I’d rather hear if a problem is on the left or right channel without soloing the channels. If I detach the audio from the clip and then break apart the clips items only the a1 track will show. I don’t see a way to just operate on each stereo track individually. I am sure I am missing something,

    Thank you Mathieu.
The range level volume setting is the workaround I’ll use. I can’t see any real downside, as the control points are close to each other, even if I feel more accurate with the way I used before. Cutting one channel only is not really something I can’t live without, but I am curious to know if there was a way to accomplish that anyway.
    Kind regards

January 15, 2013 at 9:03 am in reply to: Changing field dominance

    Bret,
I have the Event on the second display on my main editing machine, a MacPro. Yesterday I tried the same operation on my MBP, single onboard screen, and the clips did not retain the change just as well. However, even if I could get to fix the multiple clip field dominance change, I think ClipWrap would still be the way to go. Having all the clips ready for editing form the beginning without the need for a further action would be a time saver and a safer editing environment. Actually, if I forget to correct a clip dominance and output to IMX PAL for delivery, after I double check playing the master file on a CRT, if I find an altered clip, I need to go back to the HD timeline, correct the clip, encode again, and check again. Or possibly get a “rejected” from my client if I don’t notice.
