After thrashing the preferences, it seems to work now. I’ll try it a few times to see if the problem araises again.
    Thank you, and best regards

I have that issue on the other machine, an iMac. I can’t capture to a FW800 external hd, because only one of the two is recognized. I was told by the assistance that both the FW400 and the FW800 share the same bus. I only have e-sata drives on the Mac Pro, and nothing else.
    Thank you, and best regards

I’ve tried to refresh the AV devices in the view panel, but it does not seem to work. It’s definitely not a sleep mode related issue, as it happens all of the times, both if I plug the cam and then switch it on, or if I turn it on on VTR and them plug the FW. I was wondering if it was a standard function in FCP, but it seems it isn’t.
    Thank you

  • I hope so, David.
I really love the Premiere workflow, and if it only were more solid, I’d never thought of moving to a different editing SW, with all the money and time waste it brings.

  • I recently crossed the bridge to Mac and FCP, and left the PC’s and Ppro alone for a while because of the constant instability of the latter. Several different machines, Ppro from 5.1 to the latest CS2, from old Pinnacle to recent Matrox hardware, as well as software alone (that prooved on my side to be the most stable configuration. I’ve experienced so many crashes and destroyed projects that I could not figure how to go on that way. Large projects, especially if worked on for a long time, were not reliable enough, and it used to get worse when using multiple or nested sequences. Yet, it is a pity to waste years of espertise and start from scratch on a new editing SW (besides, there are some features on FCP I can’t get used to, like the clip not showing in the browser if it has or not already been used in the project, or the lack of a “scene detect” in dv while capturing). If Ppro was much more stable on a Mac, I’d go for that, but reading through the forums, it seems it is even worse than on PC.

So it seems there’s no way to do real editing on an iMac. It’s a pity, since I am shooting documentaries, and I thought I could bring the iMac with me in my working trips for the on site quick rough cut, and use it as a second editing machine when back in Rome.
If I can’t use the two FW ports at the same time, then I am forced to capture on the internal drive, then unplug the camcorder, connect the external FW HD and start editing, all editing done without the possibility to play the timeline on an external monitor. OK, I could not do it before on the PC laptop I used for the same purpose, so it won’t be a major problem now, even if I hoped different.
    Thank you!

    Thank you Doug.
I will place an e-sata card to connect the HD’s to on the Mac Pro’s, so there’ll be no problem. Meanwhile, I’ll go on with the USB2, that allowed me to work flawlessly in SD so far.
