log and capture strange problem
Posted by Fabrizio D’agnano on January 5, 2009 at 8:26 amHello.
I am running FCP, latest version, all updated, on a one year old Mac Pro.If I want to capture from one of my camcorders (in this case, a Sony HC1), FCP will connect and operate the cam only if I turn it on before launching FCP. If I am in the middle of some editing, and I want to add a new clip from some tape, I need to quit FCP, turn the cam on, and launhc FCP again, otherwise I’ll get an “unable to initialize the capture decive” warning. I find it hard to believe that this is a standard procedure. Is there any setting that I can optimize?
Thank you in advance, and best regards

January 5, 2009 at 10:01 amHi,
I’ve had the same problems with Panasonic DV camcorders, but I’m afraid it didn’t last as long as you’ve had it. Generally it happened once every couple of sessions and that was a few software versions ago.
I’m assuming a Firewire connection: I know I’ve always had the camera fully switched on in VTR mode before connecting. I’ve seen Avids and FCP’s have problems initiating FW connections if the camera’s plugged in during a session. If you’ve tried trashing the preferences and it’s still doing it, is there some kind of ‘sleep’ mode on the camera and it’s nodding off between capturing? It doesn’t really sound like it from your post – but you never know: it might be worth checking! 🙂 If the camera goes into battery saving mode then the FW connection will effectively be lost or if it only wakes up when a handshake is received the FCP might not like the slow reply. I always keep the camera plugged into the mains supply even with full batteries…
Hope there’s something of help there.
Todd.

January 5, 2009 at 10:53 amI’ve tried to refresh the AV devices in the view panel, but it does not seem to work. It’s definitely not a sleep mode related issue, as it happens all of the times, both if I plug the cam and then switch it on, or if I turn it on on VTR and them plug the FW. I was wondering if it was a standard function in FCP, but it seems it isn’t.
Thank you

January 5, 2009 at 12:43 pmit seems like it’s an issue with the macpro or the newest version updates or something because I just upgraded to a macpro desktop and it’s been happening to me too. it rarely ever happened when I was working on my g4. annoying especially since it’s intermittent and can’t seem to find the cause.

January 5, 2009 at 3:00 pmDo you have more than one device plugged into the FW port – including both 400 & 800. If so, try removing it. I had an issue with my G5. I had an AJA IO connected thru the FW400 port and a hard drive connected thru the FW800 port. The drive wasn’t recognized until I removed the IO. Pn the G5 the two flavors of FW interact. I don’t know if that’s true with the MacPro.

January 5, 2009 at 3:05 pmI have that issue on the other machine, an iMac. I can’t capture to a FW800 external hd, because only one of the two is recognized. I was told by the assistance that both the FW400 and the FW800 share the same bus. I only have e-sata drives on the Mac Pro, and nothing else.
Thank you, and best regards

January 5, 2009 at 3:07 pmAfter thrashing the preferences, it seems to work now. I’ll try it a few times to see if the problem araises again.
Thank you, and best regards
