    Thank you Jeff, you’re right.
I was given a wrong advice. I just downloaded the trial version, and it’s just like that.

It’s a known problem that affects several Canon’s. Everything was running smooth with XA10, HG10, M46, etc, until the latest release of FCPX. I own several of those cameras and things have turned into a nightmare because the importing process has become a hassle. My line of work is based on a lot of footage I only need small bit of. All footage coming from the Canon’s shows that problem. It’s obviously not related to cards or drive speed, because the very same set used to work just fine before latest upgrade of FCPX, and because the very same media imported via ClipWrap does not show any issue. My problem is I don’t want to transcode hours of footage to get three or four minutes out of it, and for my line of work I need to keep all media inside the Library and I don’t want to have media out of it. So it’s more steps needed. I think this problem should have been already addressed by Apple by now. However, it’s true they are old cams and maybe need an upgrade anyway, but for the time I’ll try to go for Edit Ready, because ClipWrap won’t allow me to set in and out import points on the clips. 49 bucks is still better than buying 5 new cams, and building underwater housings for them.

January 27, 2018 at 12:38 am in reply to: FCPX 10.3 Bugs

The worst bug for me is pixelation and artifacts when importing from some Canon camcorders like the HF-G10. It’s really annoying, since I own and use a few of them. It’s definitely a problem with the latest update, everything was just fine before, and it’s FCPX related. So I have to use ClipWrap to transcode the .mts files before I can import them. But I loose metadata like date and time of creation, and I don’t have to tell what that means when working with more than one cam. If I use the .mts files dragging them to the events from the finder the artifacts will be gone most of the times, but everything will lag and slow down to almost a halt. The second thing that I’d call a bug is that the fields in the browser will randomly but often not keep their position, so if I add “Scene” and place “Notes” next to name, sometimes I will find them in the new position, sometimes not. But it was the same with the previous release.

I found I had a forgotten licensed copy of ClipWrap and tried to transcode the .mts files to Pro Res. I did it and relinked the files from the browser (I had already used the .mts files in an edit and did not like the idea to start it all over). It seems everything is playing fine, with no glitches or pixelation and not laggy and slow as with the .mts. I didn’t have time to check it thoroughly, frame by frame, but I’m almost positive it’s ok, and the problem is in FCPX 10.4. It’s still a pain, and I hope they fix it very soon, but at least I don’t have to toss the old Canon’s in the can like I was about to do, and I have usable footage from the B rolls of the latest two sessions that I was afraid I’d lost… Wounded is still better than dead ☺

[Michael Hancock] “You could also use EditReady to transcode your footage to ProRes to see if it’s just the conversion to ProRes in general that’s causing the issue, or FCPX’s conversion in the program.

Thank you Michael. I’ll try EditReady this morning.
However, I do not think is a problem with ProRes in general, but just FCPX latest version conversion. It’s now several years I’m using those Canon camcorders, and I never had a problem importing the clips from FCPX and having them automatically transcoded until the latest upgrade.

It looks to me like it’s something a bit different. If you import into FCPX using “Import Media”, the glitch will show either if you import straight from the card or from the copy. If you just drag the .mts clip from the place you placed it onto the timeline, it will lag and slow down a lot, but look much better. I don’t know exactly what happens inside FCPX, but maybe if you use “Import Media” it will transcode the media, introducing the artifacts (in facts, it will show as a .mov file), while if you drag it it won’t transcode. Just a guess.

It seems there’s some problem with FCPX 10.4 and Canon HF G10/XA10. I’m hearing other people is experiencing similar issues with those cams. My footage shows some glitter on the upper part, like wrong pixels. Looking similar to old miniDV drops. I never had problems on the previous versions of FCPX. The same footage seems to play fine direct from the camera or on Quick Time player if I just drop the MTS file on the Desktop without FCPX transcoding it. I was just about to EOL the cam after trying different cards and seeing no improvement, but it seems the problem lies somewhere else.

    Hello.
Do you mean you copied the .mts files to your desktop and then dragged it onto the timeline? It did not work for me.

Hello. I am experiencing the very same problem with a Canon HF G10 camera. After I saw that “drops” on the upper part of the footage the first time, I blamed the card. So I tried taking more test footage with three different cards, and they all showed the glitch on the upper area, and sometimes on the lower area as well. I tried to look at the footage direct from the camera, and it was playing just fine. I was about to send the cam in for a check, but it seems the problems is somewhere else.
