it’s possible that your cpu and or your ram are too slow to execute a preview, so after you press it, it’s just struggling. Try to press 0 on the num pad or spacebar, it if happens also with those, the issue is what I told you, otherwise, you need to downgrade to an After Effects version at least 6 months older.

_a screenshot of the exact button you refer to as “center button”

_your CPU model and amount of ram

_the resolution and frame rate of your footage and composition
