Glad you cracked Canon menu at last.
In this case I’d work only with NTSC 30/60. 30 for anything that ain’t require slo-mo.
No conversions/conforming to 24 fps unless you have solid rock reason for doing it.
This way you shoot 30/60, edit 30/60, export for DVD 30fps.
This is very straightforward workflow given you haven’t fully tested more complicated one yet.

If you encode quite often for youtube you might utilize this workflow: Create quick cluster, export your movie as reference one, open it with Compressor, apply preset for youtube, submit for encoding and choose cluster instead of ‘this computer’.
It’ll load all cores and gives you significant, many times, boost to processing time.
Then you can upload video on youtube via web interface.

I bet you right. FCP 7 is not a work in progress any more. It’s history.

As you rephrased your PAL/NTSC notion now it seems a plausible idea. Sorry, i don’t use 550d and my suggestion was made on a false premise that it can shoot 30/60 fps.
Having two cameras shooting different frame rates is a game-changer. With this deck at the table I guess your workflow is supposed to work ok.
TV’s ain’t work with 24 fps. Though it’s pretty convenient DI for it’s much more easier to convert it into either 29.97 or 25 fps.

I do understand you completely. You err on the right side sometimes overprotecting or oversimplifying things. I agree it’s prudent and in long run will yield better. I do not advocate here some drastic measures or totally unrealistic and not practical steps.
The original question was can I output to deck from iMac. I said Yes, though I’d not condone using iMacs for production. You said No because issues are increasingly likely to occur.
We are not that far apart at the of the day, are we.

Nothing. It’s totally up to how much horse power you have. In my personal opinion, share feature is notoriously slow compered to other direct methods.

I’m arrogant bastard – never touched iMac or mac mini for work.
Final output doesn’t require a leap of faith – if you dropped frame while editing to tape process will abort. Other things like field issues, for example, have nothing to do specifically with iMacs or Mac Pros.
I read lots of posts over here and some other places – people always have problems there where I never have had a single issue of that kind or magnitude.

Obviously you’re pretty good at math but I don’t see where your statistics come from. Please provide a link if you can.
I stick to my guns: You can use iMac for outputing to deck. Even with HD footage on boot disk you have enough leeway to do that. Though I would not recommend using iMac in full circle production.

With all due respect I disagree.
On iMac he can use internal drive for capture.
Secondly, he will output material, not capture, so your whole point about FW gets irrelevant.
Thirdly, I can capture on external drive connected via USB, it works without issue for years on my mac pro. I’m sure it’ll do the same way on iMac.

Out of three you mentioned Digibeta is most expensive. I can’t say much about I/O cards because I work only with aja and so far so good (the last 5 yrs). AJA markets external io card but I personally find the price tag not that attractive.
By functionality aja, matrox, and black magic give you approximately the same level of confidence. I think you must justify your decision by sheer economics and your personal likes or dislikes.
