Using the FCP 7 “you tube sharing” feature – render time seems long
Well, better late than never, I JUST got FCP 7 loaded yesterday (been on 6 for the past few years) and the Apple server, at least as of yesterday, was still serving up the updaters.
I’m enjoying my “new” edit software, particularly the “share” button to export simple DVD’s and Youtube encodes right from the timeline. The DVD one worked clean and fast, impressive.
But…
The Youtube one is taking over two hours at this point to compress an 8 minute HD piece and upload it. It seems stuck with the progress bar mocking me with “about 3 minutes, 30 seconds left to finish”. But that number is slowly going up over the last hour, now saying it has 4 minutes and some odd seconds left.
This thing’s been encoding/uploading for over two hours now, that seems excessive based on my experience from version 6, where I would export using quicktime conversion into an h.264, then upload that.
Those of you who are more experienced in v. 7, what can you suggest?

Nothing. It’s totally up to how much horse power you have. In my personal opinion, share feature is notoriously slow compered to other direct methods.

Running an octocore Mac pro, with a fast net connection, so this is strangely slow performance for me. When it got to three raltime elapsed hours of working and estimating a completion time raising from the never-changing 3 minutes to an escalating nine minutes, I closed out the upload and went to my old fashioned method.

I bet you right. FCP 7 is not a work in progress any more. It’s history.

If you encode quite often for youtube you might utilize this workflow: Create quick cluster, export your movie as reference one, open it with Compressor, apply preset for youtube, submit for encoding and choose cluster instead of ‘this computer’.
It’ll load all cores and gives you significant, many times, boost to processing time.
