It could also be a defective RAM issue. I had a 1GB RAM chip go bad out of my installed 8GB. The system would seem to run fine, but then, the exact thing happened. I would start a long render and then it would crash half way in. I had to track down the bad chip one by one. Replaced it and all is well again. Even huge renders. Not saying that’s the cause, but also a place to check.

Where can you find the option for processor speed in the Energy Saver section? I do remember they used to have this on older OS, but on 10.4?

You confusing Close-Captioning with subtitling. Subtitles are always on the screen for translation (For example, a french soundtrack for the US market would have the works in English on the screen all the time)
Close-Captioning is for example, an English soundtrack with English words appearing on the screen for Deaf people, but only if you active the Close-Captioning feature on your TV. This is encoded in the video on line 21 of the signal and not burned into the picture full-time like subtitles.
—————Come on guys, there has to be some computer geek out there that can write this code for a plug-in that he could sell for say $200! It doesn’t have to be fancy with scrolling type, just basic word boxes. You’d make a bloody fortune!!!

I just got an Apple 30″ LCD to replace two aging 21″ CRT’s. OMG! There is no going back. The 30″ is specacular. The quality and acuracy is incredible. And talk about visual real-estate. I can have everything right there. Less wasted time finding bins or even scrolling the bin to find clips.
I did have a heck of a time finding a way to extend the hardwired cable because, I have the hardware in a seperate room to keep the edit suite q-u-i-e-t. FYI: Gefen makes an extender that actually works (Up to the highest resolution).

I bought the 30″. Anybody reading this… it’s a must have. Looks beautiful. I had reservations about the LCD technology (blask, contrast etc) forget-about-it! Looks more accurate than my older CRT’s, not mention way sharper.
