I’ve been shooting with the VariCam for about 3 years. Just bought a 900 about 2 months ago. The 900 has a slight edge in PQ due to better processing. Less noise, especially in low-light. I’ve intercut footage shot from both cameras into a show and they are pretty much indistinguishable. Other than that, it really just comes down to features.
Search this out, it’s been discussed in detail many times. Biggest difference is VariCam has variable frame rates as it’s biggest plus vs. 900 has SD down-convert built-in, 1080 & 720 selectable and has Firewire out.

Plasma’s are prone to burn-in with static images (vertical lines at your 4:3 image frame) LCD’s don’t get burn-in, but lack the black level detail of Plasma’s. That’s why all serious color correction is still done using CRT’s, which are still the best overall. Can you vary the frame size while editing or are there clients watching?

What kind of lens are you using? Top quality? Any filtering? Sometimes even a clear filter might add to the blooming.

It’s only standard definition, so it’s life span is pretty short. You might want to wait for an HD version. Here’s a link to more info.

How would a lipstick camera be buggy with FCP? You still have to plug them into a deck like DV or a bigger deck like a BetaSP. You can edit all formats fine with FCP. What specific issues with FCP are you referring to?

I’ve had my 900 for about a month and comparing shots on both, the 900 is a bit cleaner in low light. There also a couple of user functions that I like over the Vari-cam. You have two preset buttons on the side for two viewfinders presets. Nice to be able to have wide-screen and 4:3 safe zones quickly. It’s nice to have the built-in down-converting SD out too. I feed that into a wireless SD transmitter for clients. I haven’t found anything not to like yet.

What looks really cool is to physically shoot the TV screen of a small B&W TV. Adjusting the rabbit ears for some really nice random efx.

I’ve got the Sonnet Tempo SATAII E4P card in my Mac Pro 2.66 The card has 3GB transfer speed and 4 outputs. That connects to a Sonnet Fusion 500 enclosure with (5) 300GB Maxtor Maxline III drives. Very nice setup and expandable as the card has 4 outputs and the enclosure has a multiplier thus only uses one of the cards outputs!

Thanks for the info. I’ve read about guys doing this, but wasn’t sure how they did it? I guess you could always use a SATA card with internal connectors.
Yes, I already have a 5 drive SATA external RAID, but wanted to install another internal 4 drive RAID too.
