SATA-RAID recs
Posted by Paul Escamilla on February 2, 2007 at 10:28 pmWe need to get a SATA-RAID so I can edit some HD projects. I’m on a Dual 1.8ghz with 3 gigs of RAM, running 10.4.8 and FCP 5.0.4
On another thread, the CalDigit RAIDS were recommended. Are there any others that people are happy with?
Also, I just want to be sure I’m clear on this. I will need a PCI-SATA card, the SATA-RAID, and a controller. Anything else or are those all the parts?Samuel Adamski replied 19 years, 3 months ago 8 Members · 20 Replies -

February 2, 2007 at 10:42 pmI have two S2VR Duo units and love them. They come with everything you need…card (PCI-X or PCIe), controller card and drives.
500GB, 1TB, 1.5TB models.
Sonnet sells cases and controller cards separate…and you’ll have to buy your own drives. But many people like to build their own.
And MacGurus have the Burly Box that people are happy with.
But I like the CalDigit units. Get everything in one box…ready to go.

VERY STABLE. haven’t had a problem in our 4 months of using it.
We use it every day to edit our HD project. You will only need:
1. FASTA-4 card (choose from PCIe or PCIx), their FAQ tells you which one you need
https://www.caldigit.com/faq.asp2. SATA RAID – which is S2VR HD (choose from 1.5TB to 3.75TB)
https://www.caldigit.com/S2VRHD.aspthat’s all you need.
I especially like the way – single vendor support, caldigit offers. very easy to get support from them. Great product, great support.
hope this helps.

February 2, 2007 at 11:01 pmI’ve got the Sonnet Tempo SATAII E4P card in my Mac Pro 2.66 The card has 3GB transfer speed and 4 outputs. That connects to a Sonnet Fusion 500 enclosure with (5) 300GB Maxtor Maxline III drives. Very nice setup and expandable as the card has 4 outputs and the enclosure has a multiplier thus only uses one of the cards outputs!

and for good reason. We’re running S2VR HD unit here cutting HD all day every day. Also tested the S2VR Duo and it was a solid box too.
Comes with PCI-X for your machine. Just need to specify that when ordering.

February 3, 2007 at 1:18 amWow! Seems like pretty universal acclaim for the CalDigit products. I have to say I’m leaning in their direction.
One further question. On doing a system profile, it appears that I already have a Sonnet Tempo-X SATA 4+4 card installed on my G5. This surprised me. Guess the computer came loaded with it?
Anyone know if this’ll work with the CalDigit SATA-RAIDS (or those of other manufacturers)?

February 3, 2007 at 1:28 amCan anyone explain the difference between pci-x and pci-e? When would you use one and when the other?

PCI-x is the architecture for the older G5 machines. PCI-e is the archtiecture for all new machines from the G5 Quad to the new Mac Pro machines.

Must have come from the previous owner. It isn’t a stock part.
And no, it will not work with the CalDigit unit. That card is straight SATA to SATA, the CalDigit boxes are Multi-port units…each connection powers up to 5 drives. The units ship with a card, so no worries. Sell the one in the machine.
