Are you actually using this card or just recommending it? Absolutely no disrespect, but I ask because so many just point to gear that might work, then in reality, doesn’t.
How does this card work with FCP? When you install it, do you get additional choices under VIEW-VIDEO PLAYBCK or is the output full time over the HDMI card?

I’ve been working with it for 2 weeks now, and no bugs or crashes for me. Workin’ like a champ. I haven’t dug into Color yet, as I opened it and without learning it, it looks nice, but complicated.
You’re going to have to update sooner or later, might as well be now!

I think what makes most sense is who really needs the speed? Which area makes the most money and who has the ‘savey’ clients? Will the editing clients know you don’t have the most current Mac and will that keep them away from your shop?
Or will the graphics guys benefit by getting more graphics created on say… a bid, where there’s no clients sitting there.

Just tried my 900 at 720p50 and with the shutter set to 1/60 you can get rid of the 99% of the US 60Hz light flicker.

I use an older Panasonic E80H. It also has a built-in HD, so you can archive to that and make multiple dubs later. There’s plenty of DVD burners from Panny and other companies.

If your deck has both Firewire out and analog outs and you are capturing to FCP with FW, then you can feed the analog outs to a standalone DVD recorder. I have one and it’s great for quick dubs or reference window burns. It records in real-time straight to DVD.

The rule of thumb is to usually upgrade to the most powerful system you can afford, because it will have a longer life.
Other factors to consider is cost/speed. The faster system, the more you can get done in the same time. Some edit facilities don’t upgrade right away because by being a little bit slower, they can charge more hours on a project. I’m from the other school, get it done faster and make the clients happy.

I might be better to create the QT files at the exact resolution of the monitor (then no ugly video scaling needed) then just play them on a small Mac Mini connected to the monitor. It might look much cleaner without the DVD compression. Just a thought.

I 2nd the don’t go too far. It’s much safer to paint in post than to attempt this while shooting on location unless you do have accurate monitoring/waveform.
