HDMI output
Posted by Ernie Santella on June 12, 2007 at 1:46 pmAny suggestions on getting an HDMI video only feed out of FCP on an Intel 2.66 machine? I want to feed a high-end projector with HDMI.
I know they make some HDMI PCI cards as well as possibly an SDI to HDMI converter box (I have a KONA 3). Anybody having success getting one of these options to work?

Are you actually using this card or just recommending it? Absolutely no disrespect, but I ask because so many just point to gear that might work, then in reality, doesn’t.
How does this card work with FCP? When you install it, do you get additional choices under VIEW-VIDEO PLAYBCK or is the output full time over the HDMI card?

I’ve researched this pretty thoroughly. The simple solution for those of us with a capture card installed is probably an SDI to HDMI converter. The choices I’ve looked at are the Kona Hi5 and the Decklink HDLink. According to a post on the Kona Forum, the Hi5 apparently does not seem to support 1080p, only 1080i. In my opinion that significantly lowers its longterm value. Meanwhile HDLink does support all HD flavors including 1080p, but it requires a DVI-D male to HDMI Type A female adaptor, which is included when you purchase.

I looked at the Decklink HDLink, but I’ll pass on that. DVI, with a DVI-to-HDMI adapter is limited by the lower DVI spec. DVI has issues running more than 25′ (I’ve read some guys can get 40′ on a good day) Native HDMI can go easily 50’+ which is what I need to run to my Projector.
I’m waiting to hear back from Shane on the Intensity HDMI card first. I might just do that or go for the AJA HI5 now as I’m not doing 1080p anyway.

If you already have a video card of some kind, there are HDMI convertors which can come from SDI or DVI. Convergent Design and Blackmagic make some.

June 12, 2007 at 5:14 pmI haven’t used the INTENSITY, but a friend of mine has one and loves it. Uses it with his HDV camera to capture HDV as DVCPRO HD. I don’t think there are any more capture input options, but there were a few output options.
BUT…I was blind and didn’t notice that you had a Kona 3 already…so I’d skip the intensity. Do what the others suggest, get a converter.
Shane
