Is the SD to SD Conversion JUST for Kona 2 and 3? Buhu! Great update otherwise! (Still waiting for my Universial Final Cut Studio update to arrive

I’m still a newbie with FCP, however, I’m am surprised no one mentioned having the ability to monitor audio while digitising – it freaks me out not being able to hear what i’m recording. The mac can show me what I’m recording, I would think it is an easy thing to handle audio (even just the meters).
You get audio-preview though your mac or capture-card (what ever you prefer). This depends on your setup.
Oh, and could we get a WYSIWYG text tool? Avid’s Type Tool is pretty bad, but it is better than this.
Boris Title 3D does an “ok” jobb here, but hopefully FCP 6 will introduce similar tools we find in Motion for text.
That said, I do like the way you can adjust audio levels while playing a clip.
This again can be done now as well with the audio-mixing-level-meters set to record.

October 2, 2006 at 5:27 pm in reply to: Is it really this simple? : Uncompressed masterGoing from DVCPRO HD to Uncompressed HD should be better than just going DVCPRO HD > SDI out from the Kona. Internally in FCP you’ll get a DVCPRO HD compressed to DVCPRO HD (1 gen loss at least) even if going out through SDI. Moving to an uncompressed timeline will not do this.
The it all depends on what you do and how much you’ll notice it. DV > uncompressed handled as the above method was like day and night when doing color corrections or adding graphics and titles. Eventhough DVCPROHD is a good 4:2:2 codec, it’s compressed quite hard (10:1 or so).
Make sure you use the “best” scale in the new timeline and as Graeme states some filtering can be nice.

Apple mentions that the new scopes require a “realtime codec” to work. Since legacy codecs and Animation isn’t part of this I reckon, that’s why you don’t get the correct feedback.
-
The limiter really is a good feature, but my questions are “how good is it” and “how reliable is it”?
I guess I’ll have to get the 5.1 update now then
-
Well, since Motion usually is faster than After Effects I wouldn’t say Apple is being Evil – I’d say it’s a whole software vs hardware conspiracy 🙂
However, as stated, Motion is about 3 years old, After Effects about 15 years old or so. Motion does have ALOT higher computer demands the AE, but will do things you couldn’t dream of in AE in realtime.
Then again, the audition of plugins like Nucleo Pro makes you wish other companies thought of the same ideas (spec-previews for instance).

Ah, I see where you’re going and I fully agree. Motion is too much “realtime / GPU” based in my option too. Hopefully we’ll see a good mix in the future where hardware and software “meet” at a good point.

Yeah, I know about Monet (as well as Mokey etc). They seem like great apps that fit into alot of different workflows. However, Monet is currently priced at 18 000 dollars I reckon – getting that would basically double the value of my editing suite – including computer hardware and storage! 🙂
But yes, I’ve seen it do it’s magic “live” at IBC last year and it does do it well.

Hehe, that is true Steve. You released Nucleo (now Nucleo Pro) and I asked my self – way can’t I add this to 10 machines at my office at the same time and get a 30X increase in speed? 😉
