This codec did rasie my eyebrows a bit yes. It will be interesting to see how it works compared to DVCPRHD or DV50 in SD.

What I think is a bit odd is Apple NOT creating a 4:2:2:4 or 4:4:4:4 codec that works nativly in realtime in FCP. Perhaps the open timeline will accept Animation-files with alpha now?

Eventhough this is totaly off topic I’m looking for exactly the same thing Jeremy G is – a round-trip solution from FCP to AE. We do a lot of FX and compositing-shots for adds and such. My work-flow usually is

    1. Offline-edit in FCP (DV)
    2. Online-edit in FCP (10-bit SD generally)
    3. Color Correction tend’s to be done in FCP with the built in tools. Works like a charm usually.
    4. Effects are done in either Shake or AE.

It’s step 4 that is ha hassle if step 3 occurs, which it tends to do. Someone should come with a solution to send a complete edit to AE from FCP WITH the effects intact. If they might be rendered, that’s quite fine by me. But the best solution would be to have them brought into a plugin with also lives in After Effects.

Actually the above is my biggest issue today in my workflow. It tends to make me render out intermediates from FCP and export / import like hell to AE. Not good I must say

Sad to hear this, but perhaps this is a program that sounds better on paper than it works in real life.

Go for the ATI card. Solid price/performance. More and more apps will use the GPU for accelertaion so this will be good to have in the future (FCS 5.1.2 does this on certain effects, Motion relies soly on the GPU etc).

  • I had the same issues as you. I did a archive and install of the system and things got working again. Now, however, alot of apps are missbehaving so I’m doing a complete format and install from scratch today.

    Yay!

I’ll let you know how things go!

  • That didn’t help sadly

As I stated the Media 100 today has gone away from the “old” HDX board to a Kona 3 plattform and they do things Apple FCP doesn’t. I reakon the Kona handles SD <-> HD conversion in realtime in the timeline.

But I also reackon Apple will be moving more to a “motion-approach” for FCP. GPU acceleration will more and more take over the work off the CPU in the future – even handling stuff like compression in realtime.

NAB might be interessting next year

If Apple moves FCP the way it seems they are, it should take on more features of OSX and Motion. This means a lot more freedom when it comes to managing effects and media than it does today. GPU’s have to problems handling multiple streams of video or graphics with alpha. It will come to FCP some day

I understand the Kona 2 and especially Kona 3 plattforms have a lot better processing power onboard. However, as Ron points out – the Kona LS and LH is “more suited” for SD-work. We when with the Kona LHe for analog and digital SD and HD. HD is secondary, SD i still primary. Kona 3 is all digital
