Assuming both recorders are set to the same levels & settings and recording the same source at the same time and you still prefer one over the other then it has me stumped. There are too many variables in the record/playback chain to pin point one thing although pre amp design differences are at the top of my list.

Are you sure of the Sony model number? The Sony EX3 is a $10,000 camera that records on SxS cards.

A 10′ length of 1″ PVC pipe will bend like a rainbow when you add the weight of a shockmount & mic to the end plus it will sway side to side as there’s no lateral stability. An aluminum Avalon pole from K-tek is a much better choice at under $200.

The speakers have an amplifier in them?

The main problem with a painters pole is that there’s no easy way to attach a shock mount to the pole. The thread sizes are different.

The 744t is the master clock. Everything gets jammed from it. Time of day is always good but be wary of going past midnight as there is no hour 13 and the slate will show hour 1 again.
Setting up the RED to accept external TC is a bit of a chore if you’ve never done it before. You can eliminate the lockit box and use a TC slate jammed from the 744t but you’ll have to be certain every take gets slated just as if you were shooting film.
Be sure the frame rate on your recorder is set for 29.97 if they’re shootin at 30fps and 23.97 if they’re shooting at 24fps. As a guide for editing you can send a guide track to the RED at mic level via a wireless hop. Good luck.

With an internal battery in the mic it doesn’t matter if the phantom is on or off.

True but it’s not a solution to the problem. The problem is the narrators enunciation and speech patterns, both of which can be corrected by a speech therapist or by having the narrator listen to the track and have them work on correcting the issue themselves.
