WOW! That is very strange. Can you recreate the setup at home to see if it’s duplicateable? As a guess I would think it’s the Pix 240 getting up to speed?

The fans that cool the Red create acoustic noise that is picked up by the microphone. You should run a test with the Red so you & the director can judge for youselves how intrusive it is. Syncing in post is simple with PluralEyes. Go to https://www.singularsoftware.com and read up on it. For $150 it’s the best investment he could make.

I wouldn’t rely on the Red to do anything reliable. It’s a noisy camera with fan issues that will overpower any dialog near it. I would use a mixer and a wireless system to feed the Red a scratch track at best and use the Zoom fed from the mixer for your main dialog tracks. The Zoom audio can be sunk up in post against the Red audio by using Plural Eyes from Singular Software.
OTOH it’s his project so if he’s insistant about doing it his way let him and let the chips fall where they will.
BTW the audio inputs on the RedOne are NOT standard size XLR’s, they are mini XLR’s so you’ll need an adaptor cable that has a standard female XLR to a mini or TA3 male.

Since you’re getting interference in two different locations it’s probably not RF issues. I would first check the lav mic for an intermittent connection by plugging it into your system and listen for any noise that can be induced by moving the mic cable at the ends. If there’s a problem at the connector end it most likely be repaired, if it’s at the capsule end, a new mic is called for.
If that doesn’t solve the problem then I would seriously think about a new wireless system. It doesn’t pay to try and get it fixed as the cost will be close to what you paid 4 years ago.

The appropriate cable would have a matching connector for the mixers output and the recorders input. Most likely it would be a line level or pro-sumer level (tape) output on an RCA or 1/4″ connection on the mixer. You would set your recorder for line level in not mic level in.
To be safe I would set the recorders input level at -20 to prevent any overload distortion or use the auto level setting on the recorder.

Do you plan to use a mixer between the mic & the recorder? You’ll need 48v phantom to power the MKH 50. How many tracks will you need on the recorder? What’s your budget for the recorder? You’ve got a great mic, don’t hold it back with recorder with minimal preamps. More detailed info about your project will lead to better results here.

You really don’t want to use a stereo mic for dialog recording. While it can be done it gets wierd in editing & post. Mono for dialog and save the stereo for ambience/effects and atmospheres.
