Spent a few days syncing 800+ R3Ds with 800+ WAV files using FCPX Sync option.
It was maybe 80% bang on.
The flow went straight into Resolve 11 (numerous fails here) then to Avid.
I am confident that in FCPX the audio was synced.
But I was told that it wasnt in Avid.
I could have checked but at this point, I was done with this one.
    Next time, sync with TimeCode.
I learned a lot during that brutal workflow at least.

  • It happens sadly.

Were on our 7th nMP and they are all still kicking it hard.

We’ve gone through 2 dozen plus cheese graters and one was a fail at delivery.

Not bad considering a half a year was spent returning a brand new Dell Precision (Maya box) back and forth then a few visits for a mobo replacement blah blah blah…

It was the last Dell in our dept.

I might be hanging myself with this post but I’ll add my looney anyway.
I teach basic FCPX and Premiere Pro at local college.
It always baffles me when not even a day in, the students are already cutting in FCPX at a decent pace.
The program is so friendly and doesnt require the “walking on glass” approach like PPro does.
Maybe its my (in)ability to teach but Im sure other instructors can chime in.
Now of course, this could be way off topic.

There was two that I know off.
A green and the the RED one.
The latest is the ROCKET-X which to me is way overpriced.

Even wtih Element loaded in our shop, I cant seem to shake off working in Maya for even the most trivial projects 🙂
I like where all this is going, making it an easier route for 3D assets.

    Thanks Oliver for clarifying.
With FCPX 10.1.4, R11 and Avid MC, I received complaints from the Avid editor (last feature I worked on) that some of the audio was off by a few frames and more.
This was clips synced in FCPX > XML > R11 > AAF > Avid MC.
After working with over 800 R3D files, they just turned around and said they would do it manually to keep the timecode intact.
I didnt get a chance to see what their workflow entails and why it didnt work out for them.
I did see a weird bug with all 16 channels intact all the way up to Avid MC even when I select only two channels.

Ive been working with that workflow along with Avid MC and Pro Tools for weeks (well technically over a year in some broken up capacity).
But of late Ive been testing the Synchronize Clips option from FCPX to Resolve then to Avid.
Oliver what was the reason for not using the Auto Sync?
from the 800 plus R3D clips I had to work with (sync to Sound Devices WAV files), I got maybe 80% bang on so I had to do the manual version (Open in Timeline option).
Was there a particular reason you avoided the FCPX Sync option?

BMD has done some amazing code with the Resolve 11.
Im hearing great things with fast export with R3Ds.
When I have time Ill test a few nMPs at work.
At home I have an old Mac Pro with ROCKET and R11 flies at DPX export nicely 🙂

    So true.

People forget the power is in their hands and not the software itself.

Users are finding ways to create with FCPX, not bad for $300 USD.
