  • Thanks Adam, that’s exactly the method I was looking for. I really do need to think about deformers more often, rather than relying on the ease of animating parametric objects. Much appreciated.

  • OK, so after more experimentation I had better luck aligning the hands with the regular biped rig as opposed to the advanced biped rig. My guess is that keyframes for the wrist tip target goal controller in the advanced biped rig need certain conditions in order to see them in the timeline? I would still love to see more tutorials on this new R13 module.

Ah, I suspected the Visibility button was key but thought it only applied to Time Offset. I failed to make the connection between that and the Noise/Turbulence mode. This works great – thanks a bunch!

Sometimes there’s a fine line between ignorance and stupidity. The Kensington Turbo Mouse has a scroll wheel hugging the base of the trackball which I never use and which changes the magnification level with the lightest of touches! I have since disabled it in the preferences and all is well again. Thanks Todd.

Muchos gracias for the info. Nice to know BP is included in the upgrade (missed that little tidbit in the literature), and nice to hear about Riptide making things easier for OBJ import/export. I’ll check out ZBrush more closely, but I have to tell ya, being mostly a visual editor-type operator, the Mudbox demo makes the app look incredibly easy to use. Thanks again for your input.

Thanks for the helpful feedback. Not only were my suspicions confirmed but the CalDigit RAID Card is a great tip. I was only looking at the Mac RAID card and HighPoint RocketRAID. I’ll wait until the CalDigit card ships in June before reconfiguring my current – and woefully small – Huge RAID array. Thanks again!

Not sure about using Pacifist to remove QT 7.4.0. I had to reinstall the entire system from my Leopard disk which put me back to QT 7.2, then upgraded to 7.3 without any problems and then AE renders were fine. However the new QT 7.4.1 update is presently the best solution. Whatever it was the folks at Apple fixed it. Just wish they had done a little “testing” before releasing that awful update.

February 5, 2008 at 7:23 pm in reply to: Compressor 3.0.2 not working with QT 7.3

Thanks for the link. It did point out several files that AppZapper missed when I deleted Compressor for a reinstall. Unfortunately it still doesn’t help. I deleted all Compressor, Qmaster and Motion files per the tech doc, then had to reinstall all 8 disks of Final Cut Studio 2 (once more, it wouldn’t let me install only Compressor; instead I had to install everything all over again). Even the older install version of Compressor (3.0) doesn’t work, which leads me to think it has nothing to do with using QuickTime 7.4 but is something else entirely. At this point I don’t know what to do except backup all my files, erase the hard drive, and reinstall Leopard and all my apps, updating everything except QT which I should keep at 7.3 if I want to render After Effects comps. Anyone has any other suggestions perhaps? I’m running a dual 3GHz Mac Pro with 8GB of RAM so speed and memory should not be a factor.

Yep, the problem is definitely QT 7.4. Actually going back to QT 7.3 wasn’t too bad. You do need to re-install Leopard and then, in my case, upgrade from QT 7.2 to 7.3. But it certainly fixed the render issue. The big question: is anybody at Adobe and/or Apple listening? Unless you have a support package it’s a royal pain to contact either one of them. This is a huge issue for After Effects users on the Mac.

I also get this error message: “After Effects error: opening movie – you do not have permission to open this file (-54)”. I have searched Adobe’s data base for answers. No luck. One thing I notice; the render always stops at exactly 10-minutes. It doesn’t matter where in the composition or what level of complexity. I can always restart the render from where it quit and go for another 10-minutes. It is one of the most frustrating problems (among others) that I’ve encountered with CS3.
