Has anyone checked out Autodesk’s new Mudbox sculpting software? It seems incredibly easy and intuitive to model, paint and texture objects. Been thinking of getting the Bodypaint module for C4D but at $795 it’s more expensive than the standalone Mudbox app which costs $745, and you can do more things with Mudbox. Potential problem is compatibility. Mudbox is designed to work with Maya, although it does export OBJ models and separate texture/displacement layers which I imagine can be imported into C4D. But I don’t know how well the mesh models translate or how easy it is to apply the same textures/displacements. Anyone have any thoughts and/or experience on this?

First off, with r11 BodyPaint is now a part of the Cinema base module, so if you have r11 you have BP. Likewise, if you upgrade BP comes with. Maxon is presently running an upgrade special if you have an older version — might be worth looking into.

Re: Mudbox, I don’t use it but I know Cinema users who do and who are happy with it. Obj. import/export works fine if you use the free (or more advanced $$) Riptide plugin. You can also use the native .obj import export, but it doesn’t keep point order the same so you’ll have problems if the mesh is animated.

As a rule you’ll just be importing a mesh into Mudbox and then exporting displacement/bump/color maps to use back in C4D.

You might also look into ZBrush which peforms similar functions to MudBox. I use it and I like it, but some are turned off by the interface/workflow.

Muchos gracias for the info. Nice to know BP is included in the upgrade (missed that little tidbit in the literature), and nice to hear about Riptide making things easier for OBJ import/export. I’ll check out ZBrush more closely, but I have to tell ya, being mostly a visual editor-type operator, the Mudbox demo makes the app look incredibly easy to use. Thanks again for your input.
