Kate,
I am having the same problem with my HV30 and FCP 6.0.4. If you solved the problem, can you please tell me how you did it?
In my case my Sony HC-96 (SD) cam still works fine for Log and Capture. But when I connect the HV30 using the same cable, FCP won’t recognize it. I tried a variety (all?) of the device settings, including ‘Noncontrollable Device’ to no avail.
I tried trashing the FCP preferences and that didn’t help.
It “feels” like there is something wrong with the HV30. But when I plug and unplug the Firewire cable from the camera, the ‘HDV/DV’ indicator goes on and off as expected.
If anyone else has any suggestions, I’m all ears.

Johannes,
I have seen a similar problem when I simply move my files from one location to another, such as to a different folder or drive in my system and reconnect them. In my case, even the active angle loses synch.
I have a multi-cam project in which the SD footage was shot with 4 consumer cams, 3 Sonys and 1 JVC. Only the JVC footage loses synch. When I reconnect the JVC footage, I get warned that the DV Start/Stop values are not the same. After reconnecting, I can confirm in the browser that the DV Stop value is slightly different from what it was before moving the file.
A workaround I had in mind was to figure out where the DV Start/Stop attributes are stored by FCP for each file, then see if I can “poke” the correct values back in after reconnecting. Unfortunately, I don’t know where those values are stored. Such a workaround might be possible for you as well(?).

February 14, 2008 at 12:38 am in reply to: Multiclip Problem – Need some QUICK help please!Sounds like your multiclips may be collapsed. Try this:
1) Select the multiclips you want to expand in the timeline.
2) Choose Modify, Uncollapse Multiclip(s) from the menu. You can search the FCP manual for “Collapsing and Expanding a Multiclip” for more info (or go to Vol II, pg. 281 in the FCP v6 manual).

Yet another possibility would be to export self-contained QuickTime Movies from your sequence one at a time, with in/out points set to mark the beginning and ending of each one. Marking the ins/outs would be equivalent to using the blade tool in what you first described as the problem.
You’d now have self-contained “clips” on your disk that you could import back into FCP and use as you wish. See “Exporting a QuickTime Movie File” in Part III of the FCP v6 manual, pg. 240, if you want to go that way.

Ryan and Dan obviously understand what the CMOS sensor rolling shutter issues are, but for anyone reading this thread who isn’t familiar with them, this is a great explanatory article:

If you export an FLV1 (Flash) format video, YouTube will accept your video without transcoding and causing the quality problems that you see. This article explains how you can “trick” YouTube into accepting a video that is longer than its length restrictions:

If you have Adobe Flash CS3 Professional installed, you will have the option to export FLV via FCP –> QuickTime:

Simon,
I don’t think you will have any problem with FCP. I was using Pinnacle on Windows myself about a year ago, and had never used a Mac before. When I needed multi-cam editing capability and was fed up with Pinnacle/Windows crashing on me, my wife convinced me to move to the “dark side” (a Mac, she is a big Apple fan). So I bought a Mac Pro and a copy of FCP v5. My wife gave me about an hour of “this is a Mac” intro training, and away I went to learn FCP on my own.
WoW what a difference. Within a day or two, I could do everything in FCP that I could do in Pinnacle, plus multi-cam editing. FCP and the Mac never seem to crash. This is very strange (but great!) when you’re used to Windows. I probably haven’t used 80% of the functionality in FCP yet, haven’t needed to, but it is good to know I’ve got plenty of power and capabilities left to learn and play with when I need them. I recently upgraded to FCP v6 and it seems just as solid.
So go ahead and take the FCP plunge, the water is fine. 🙂
