if you can, i definitely recommend upgrading to 5.1.4

every update to FCP since 5.0 has had a significant increase in P2 reliability. i had various problems with MXF footage and their resulting Quicktimes until i got to version 5.1.4. its the most stable for P2 by far.

if you play back your files in Quicktime Player, not FCP, do they look OK, or do they still have the same problems?

oh, another thing i should mention. the P2 Store has 2 USB modes, one for Mac and one for PC. when the USB is connected, if the USB light is green, its set for PC, Orange for Mac.

TO GET YOUR MAC TO SEE THE P2 STORE (TAKEN FROM A DV INFO POST):

To change compatibility mode between Mac and Windows: 1. Connect USB cable between P2 store and Mac or PC, and then turn on P2 store. 2. Make sure USB LED (D) lights. 3. Press CANCEL button (A), Battery level indicator button (B) and HDD capacity indicator button (C) simultaneously for more than five seconds. 4. The color of USB LED (D) is orange for Mac, green for Windows. NOTE : If you follow the instructions in order, the P2 store will not change modes correctly. The correct sequence is to first press and hold the HDD Capacity ( C ) and Cancel buttons (A), THEN add the Battery Check Button (B), now hold all three buttons for 5 seconds, the mode will change reliably from PC to Mac or back to PC. Doing the procedure in alphabetical order will produce hit-and-miss results. As mentioned in the note, it is necessary to connect a USB 2.0 cable to the computer or the USB mode LED will not light and you will not know which mode you have selected.

welcome to HVX200 world. i’ve been here for about 2 months and i’m never going back to tape!

when you plug in the P2 Store, it only gives you access to the P2 cards that you have copied onto it, you dont get access to the rest of the drive. it has 15 4GB partitions that the cards get written to. if you’ve copied over 7 4GB P2 cards, then 7 drives named NO NAME will appear on the desktop, but the P2 Store doesnt allow access to the other 8 partitions.

hope that helps. btw, the Mac software that comes with the P2 drive is worthless. i suggest using HD Log (in free demo mode) to offload P2 Store cards onto your Mac. another offloader is P2 Genie, but i have had limited success with that program and i dont recommend it.

yeah i got the HD Log demo and i like it a lot. but what i really need is the ability to look into the NO NAME folders to determine which one to retransfer if the original transferred with glitches. it looks like the full version of HD Log can do that, but $300 is a bit spendy for just that feature if we put it on every shooter’s laptop. $33 for P2 Genie was a little easier to swallow. i dont need HD Log’s logging ability because we already have FCS on every laptop.

May 1, 2007 at 11:20 pm in reply to: Deleting P2 files

in my case, this did not work. Xsan does not allow you to drag something to the trash and hold it there. similar to a mounted server drive. when you drag a P2 card folder to the trash, it says “This folder will be deleted immediately”. holding OPTION down during any of this process doesnt do anything. a window still comes up saying that the files are locked.

i’ve got quite a few GBs of MXF files to delete from my Xsan. any suggestions?

    thanks

April 26, 2007 at 5:46 pm in reply to: re: FCP Start Up issue

one thing that i’ve found helpful during a startup crash is watching the progress as Final Cut lists all the files its loading up as its starting up. then see what file or group it hangs up on. for me, its been either new Fonts or Plug-ins that make FCP crash. try moving the plug-ins out of the plug-ins folder, and then see if it starts alright. if you just installed a new font, move that font out of the fonts folder (be sure to check both the user fonts folder and the system fonts). in the past, i had a demo plug-in expire, which then caused FCP to crash every time it tried to load the plug-ins folder.

    hope that helps.

April 25, 2007 at 4:59 am in reply to: UPS Shutdown of XRAID

i dont think you had to be so snide. i’m interested in an answer to this question too. i run a 4 seat Xsan system, so shutting down FCP and ejecting the RAID is not an option. the APC UPS i bought for the Xserve Server and RAID array offers auto shutdown scripting for PC only via a serial cable, but not for Mac. i was not able to find a Mac option for this. but if anyone knows, i would be very interested.

    thanks

April 25, 2007 at 4:51 am in reply to: what video card/how much RAM would you get?

my mistake, you’re right. the architecture of the new Xeon is different than what Apple was using previously. Non-ECC isnt an option anymore. sorry for the outdated advice.

but i still suggest using 3rd party RAM. as an example, the Apple Store charges $2099 for 8GB (4x2GB) while OWC is $996. https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Mac-Pro-Memory

make sure that you copy all of the card contents, including the entire CONTENTS folder along with the LASTCLIP.txt file.

i would also recommend upgrading FCP from 5.0.4 to 5.1.4. Apple made some significant P2 improvements over those versions, including the ability to play back a MXF file in the P2 Import window without having to extract a Quicktime file. you still need to extract a Quicktime file to edit in FCP though.
