Mac doesn’t see P2 store
Posted by Dale Fakess on May 3, 2007 at 5:42 pmI’ve just stepped into the P2 world with my first HD camera, the Panasonic HVX200. I purchased the camera as a package, complete with an AJ-PCS060G P2 store. I’m editing with Final Cut Pro 5 on a (non-intel) G5 Mac. My problem is my Mac is unable to recognize the P2 store. I’ve loaded the Mac software that came with the P2 store to no avail. I am able to see the P2 card when it’s inside the store, but I’m unable to take advantage of the hard disk. Any ideas as to what the problem is?
Thanks,

May 3, 2007 at 8:25 pmwelcome to HVX200 world. i’ve been here for about 2 months and i’m never going back to tape!
when you plug in the P2 Store, it only gives you access to the P2 cards that you have copied onto it, you dont get access to the rest of the drive. it has 15 4GB partitions that the cards get written to. if you’ve copied over 7 4GB P2 cards, then 7 drives named NO NAME will appear on the desktop, but the P2 Store doesnt allow access to the other 8 partitions.
hope that helps. btw, the Mac software that comes with the P2 drive is worthless. i suggest using HD Log (in free demo mode) to offload P2 Store cards onto your Mac. another offloader is P2 Genie, but i have had limited success with that program and i dont recommend it.

May 3, 2007 at 8:36 pmoh, another thing i should mention. the P2 Store has 2 USB modes, one for Mac and one for PC. when the USB is connected, if the USB light is green, its set for PC, Orange for Mac.
TO GET YOUR MAC TO SEE THE P2 STORE (TAKEN FROM A DV INFO POST):
To change compatibility mode between Mac and Windows: 1. Connect USB cable between P2 store and Mac or PC, and then turn on P2 store. 2. Make sure USB LED (D) lights. 3. Press CANCEL button (A), Battery level indicator button (B) and HDD capacity indicator button (C) simultaneously for more than five seconds. 4. The color of USB LED (D) is orange for Mac, green for Windows. NOTE : If you follow the instructions in order, the P2 store will not change modes correctly. The correct sequence is to first press and hold the HDD Capacity ( C ) and Cancel buttons (A), THEN add the Battery Check Button (B), now hold all three buttons for 5 seconds, the mode will change reliably from PC to Mac or back to PC. Doing the procedure in alphabetical order will produce hit-and-miss results. As mentioned in the note, it is necessary to connect a USB 2.0 cable to the computer or the USB mode LED will not light and you will not know which mode you have selected.

May 4, 2007 at 3:50 pmEric,
I was able to change the lights, but my G5 still doesn’t recognize the P2 store. In fact, the unit is not functioning at any level ie: formatting HDD, PC2 cards, or copying to the HDD. My Apple Disc Utility sees the P2 Drive and the partitions.Dale

May 4, 2007 at 4:44 pmYes, now I can’t even copy the P2 card to the P2 store hard drive. I can’t format the hard drive or P2 card either.

May 4, 2007 at 4:52 pmit sounds like you might have a bad P2 Store. but before we decide that, try a few things.
have you copied footage onto the P2 Store that you need? or have you not used it for a critical shoot yet?
if theres nothing critical on it, try formatting the P2 Store again. use a paper clip to hold down the HDD Format button (i’ve found that most pens dont reach deep enough). when the lights blink (within 2 seconds), press the start button. when the HDD Format light goes out, its formatted. this process only takes a second or so. P2 card reformats are almost instantaneous.
when you plug a freshly formatted P2 Store into you G5, nothing will happen because there wont be a drive to mount.
shoot some footage on multiple P2 cards, even if its just 30 seconds per card, and try to transfer them all over to the P2 Store. so like 4 cards. then plug the P2 Store into your G5 and you should see 4 drives labeled NO NAME appear on your desktop.
if at some point during this process something doesnt work, post here. then we can determine if its a bad P2 Store, bad drivers on the Mac, or something else.

May 4, 2007 at 5:04 pmEric,
I’ve tried using a paperclip and pressing the start button with no success. The HDD light doesn’t even come on. The same when I try formatting the P2 Card. -

May 4, 2007 at 5:06 pmI’ve plugged the P2 store in on my 2nd edit bay that has a Mac with the same results. The P2 store seems to be defective.
