August 19, 2013 at 4:11 pm in reply to: Rule of Thumb for amount of ram for a given system

In our testing DDR3 1600 is where the diminishing returns starts on ram performance with current editing applications. You have to also be careful here with ram above 1600 because it may require adjustment to the base clock frequency on the board which also effects the PCI-E frequency. This can cause some instability with PCI-E cards especially graphics cards. Some boards such as the new Z87 boards allow a 133 base clock frequency for ram alone with a specific divider. Other platforms do not. However the higher Speed ram such as DDR3 2000+ are the higher grade chips which means far better quality. Those are often what you want, just be careful clocking them over 1600. Many of those have more than 1 XMP profile. They will have a Profile for the rated speed and another for 1600. Then there will be the base profile that they use until an XMP profile is set. If you are not sure how to setup the bios then use the 1600 Profile. That will set the board up without changing the base clock frequency.

  • Rendering becomes a background task with lower priority when you launch another application at the same time. The CPU will start changing the pre-fetch to priority order and the higher priority data will process first. Once you slow the CPU processing down for AE render engine then it will adjust to the new data rate and stay there. The system as you have it now is close to the limit that Mac Pro will really give you. You might try changing the ram assignment per thread to 1GB in the multiprocessing options in AE. See if that changes. Beyond that it’s getting time to start looking for a new workstation if this current performance is to low for your timeframes.

Please describe wont playback. Do you start to have audio and no video. Does the transport immediately stop? Do you get a decode error when you hit play? Do you have the Hardware MPE mode or Software MPE mode on?

  • Don’t format the drives on the Windows system. Just get into the Diskpart utility and run the clean command. That will wipe the disk table info. Then you should be able to initialize and format them again on the Mac. Just don’t use Journaling. Journaling add’s allot of meta data that has and can cause problems with applications and I would not be surprised causing some issues now with the controller. Journaling is used for HFS+ partition data recovery. Other than that it has no other real function. I am proponent of writing zeros to drives to clean them out since it seems the drive manufacturers are not marking the bad blocks out before they ship them anymore. The link above from Apple’s forums has a post from the drive manufacturers as to why they suggest it also. I don’t believe you were wrong in that nor do I think that caused this issue because it shouldn’t have.

BTW you will probably have to install Mac Drive trial long enough to recognize the disks in Windows to clean them. An other option is to download Acronis or Paragon Software’s boot disk and boot to the utility. Then Delete the current partition. Then boot to Windows and clean the drives. I figure one of the 2 boot discs should boot on an IMac. If not Boot on the Windows system with the boot discs

  • Can you access the drives in Disk utility long enough to format them HFS+ Non Journaled? Do you have a Windows system available that you can run a clean command on if not?

As another workflow for Future, I would suggest a quick test with this for the DNG’s.

Convert and see how that works for you. Free trial so got some time to check it out. Also might help to take a look at First Light.

  • Well beyond that I am out of ideas. I ran into this with a Film client a while back with the Blackmagic 4K card and a Flanders Monitor. I just had him run an input from the Flanders to the video card since the Monitor would only scale down from 2K. I am surprised myself that Premiere doesn’t use the same preview drawing system that Davinci does since it scales via the GPU based on the playback settings to the I/O card. Definitely a feature request.

Change Render Multiple frames to on and set ram per thread/core to 1GB.
