Yes the P9X79 board is fine. Also don’t get the AMD card. Get the 760GTX 4GB card or the 770GTX 4GB card. Those would be far better.

You wont have the configuration options especially with the Video cards with a Dell system. The media you use will decide the ideal specs with Davinci. However you really will want a 780TI or Titan card if possible depending on your media. Atleast a 6 Core 4930K and 32GB of ram would be the other specs. Remember the PSU’s in those systems are often not load capable for 1 especially 2 of the higher end cards. They are often proprietary as well which means you cant after market swap them. The video card would most like have to be After Market swapped as well. You are correct that pricing of the hardware is a major consideration by the OEM’s. The Enthusiast hardware will always be more expensive but give the best options and performance.

Keep in mind James was deciding this based on FX and codecs he used. Some of his comps that we did comparison testing with threaded out completely and were better on 12 or more Cores. One of the comps I use for testing with 67 layers, a lot of PNG and Tiff files Renders out in 1.5 hours on a Dual 12 Core Xeon and around 3 hours on a 4.5GHz 6 core. Ram Preview performance will reflect that as well if you uncheck the box under Preferences/Multiprocessing that says use multiprocessing for Render queue only. That enables that for Ram Preview as well. The overall best configuration is really based on workflow for the specific editors. However the general rule overall is more cores/threads for AE.

Even a 6 Core at 4.5GHz cannot playback realtime well with AE. The Ram preview is really the deciding factor here at more Cores/threads means better performance on average minus the FX and codecs that don’t thread as well.

TB 2 wont change the speed of that drive at all. It takes more than 4 bay units to do that. You just need to make sure you don’t put any TB2 devices on the same chain.

The Presets are just for ease of use. Premiere on Windows supports 4K DNG media fine after the update. Those Presets just really set the editing aspect ratio, framerate, and default preview setting which is the Adobe Iframe codec. Beyond that you can use those for any media that Premiere supports natively such as DNxHD on an AVCIntra sequence for example. The PC system will have far better configuration options for the price which means better performance overall if you use the same budget for both especially since Cuda performs better than Open CL right now in Adobe.

Sounds like they have some work to do on the GPU acceleration memory management OSX still. Windows doesn’t show this.
