    Todd and steve have given you excellent advice. Even though you stated you dont have time for classes you really should consider attending the lighting workshop in Rockport, Maine. It’s a week long course that is so intense it will keep your mind spinning for at least another 6 months. It’s not cheap but well worth the cost. Look up the class by Michael Minock.

    Also the best way to learn (as mentioned by steve) is teaming up with a DoP and learning from them. Having access to gear/knowledge is very important.

  • Also in the menus under other functions (9) your PC mode should be set to USB.

  • Just to make sure;

    Did you change the camera to PC mode after having connetc to your computer via USB?

    When you hit the button in the back to change it to MCR/VCR you have to hit the button again and hold it for 2 seconds to change it to the PC mode.

    I have 2 hvx200’s with the same Chrosziel mattebox and they both have the same problem. My very talented 1st AC spent a good amount of time trying to fix it with no avail. We just zoom past it %1.5

    We too are considiring shaving it.

    I have the bebop fsbox. Works pretty well but the clearances are pretty tight. I use it when I mount to a steadicam, otherwise shoulder mounting can pretty heavy. Handheld is murder. Prime lenses+M2+bebop shoulder mount will make you wish you were being torn apart by wild animals.

    Just add to the great suggestions above;

    If you have to go in post as a final option try something like Mocha from imagineer systems. Since it’s a planar tracker you can get the cleanest results even if the phone is obscured or moves out of the shot. With their release Mocha AE you export directly and composite easier.

    good luck with your shoot,

    October 13, 2007 at 3:21 pm in reply to: Best Batteries for HPX500?

    I would recommend (if it’s in your budget to get the dionic 160). Extended run time (5.5 hours of tape time on a mpeg-imx sony camera, 4.9 hours on panasonic dvc-pro50) is great but due to it’s mass it allows the camera to be better balanced on your shoulder. You should be able to literally take your hands off and have it sit at your shoulder.

    If not dionic 90’s are great but the camera remains front heavy.

    Cheers,
