I am doing research in hopes of getting the boss to invest capital into HD gear.

Personally, I am strongly recommending not going the HDV route.

The DVCPRO HD or P2 HD seems the most logical for us financially and for the production niche we occupy.

Currently, we shoot on DVCPRO50 using Philips LDK-150s.

I have read the specs but I would like to hear some real world experiences of those using P2.
I have some concerns with workflow, archiving and figuring how many P2 cards to purchase per camera.

By the way our current edit set-up is
    FCP
    Blackmagic Decklink HD Pro
    7 TB of storage

Thanks for the help in advance.

[Eric Keener] “The DVCPRO HD or P2 HD seems the most logical for us financially and for the production niche we occupy.”

FYI…P2 HD IS DVCPRO HD. It is just recorded onto P2 cards instead of tape. But it is exactly the same format.

I have an article I wrote about my experiences with the format right here on the Cow:

And a tutorial on how to import it into FCP:

You don’t buy a ton of cards (or rent). Just like 3-6 cards, and you cycle thru them as you shoot. The article covers what we did…three different workflows.

There isnt much to add to what shane has provided, but here a few things that usually go unmentioned:

For clarification, while what Shane says (P2HD = DVCPRO-HD) was basically true at the beginning, it’s now more than that. P2HD includes DVCPRO-HD, but it also includes the new AVC-Intra format too. And may someday include other formats if Panasonic chooses to develop more formats.

    So it’s not necessarily a case of P2HD = DVCPRO-HD, it’s more a case of P2HD *includes* DVCPRO-HD (plus a lot more, such as AVC-Intra, DVCPRO50, DVCPRO25, and DV).
