  • I think youve hit the nail on the head Peter.

  • What makes a lens “HD” anyway? Ive never actually known what the difference was. The guys that chopped off the front of their FX1 used an SD lens:

  • wow, my poll failed right off the bat. I was hoping we could keep this thread specific to the poll.

Graeme I respect your opinion as you’ve been a leader on this and other forums. Surely you understand the benefits of the ability to change lenses. Im astonished that you folks that have responded so far don’t see the need for such a camera.

The glass is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle when it comes to image quality. Its just plain crazy to state that a true fujion HD lens wouldn’t make any difference. I dont have first hand experience with the lens that ships with the JVC, but the camera certainly has the ABILITY to have superior optics.

Having control over what glass you put in front of the camera is one of the most, if not the most artistic choice you make in regards to cameras.

The implementation would not be expensive, the guys that chopped off the front of their FX1 clearly showed that. I think there should be two models, one fixed, one removable.

The price increase would be mostly due to the fact that a removable lens would take sales away from the Varicam.

  • 1. Do you want removable lenses on this camera? Most definitely

    2. Would you pay more? Absolutely

    3. How much more would you be willing to pay? I would pay up to $3,000 more.

If we had the option of a removable lenses model there would be NO competition whatsoever. At this point however, the JVC model has me on the edge due to its superior optics.

Interesting article, I think we should start a new thread where people can voice their opinion about having removable lenses, I will do just so. Maybe with enough people, we can make our voices heard.

The Multibridge is both a stand-alone converter and a capture board. Its the most robust solution blackmagic offers. The original multibridge was only a standalone converter but the new ones announced at NAB can be connected to a PC to handle all the functionality of their top of the line HD capture card and then some.

You dont need any card to work with HDV, but it you want to monitor your HDV on an external display (in HD) youll need the Decklink HD for $559. If you only want to monitor HDV on a SD NTSC display then the SD cards will downconvert (although im not sure HDV is supported for downconvert yet).

    Hope that helps.

  • Not sure what was “developed” for this workflow. Not to be an ass but there is nothing new or exciting about this workflow. People started editing natively in the DVCPRO HD codec the second apple supported it, and sending the final cut as an image sequence to do a color correction and a film out is standard practice if you want to maintain the highest quality.

Also, they didnt “need” to export an Uncompressed Tiff sequence to send off for Visual FX. They didnt gain anything from doing that, it was just one step the FX company didnt have to do themselves. Although it would have worked just as well in the original DVCPRO HD codec rendered out to 10bit or floating point.

April 26, 2005 at 5:15 pm in reply to: Order your Panasonic AG-HVX200 HD P2 at BH store TODAY!

2k per card is completely over priced. The thread below clearly shows you can make your own P2 cards with off the shelf parts at a fraction of the cost. And a company like Panasonic could (if they wanted to) even go cheaper because they can buy in bulk and manufacture large quantities.

I know Jan speaks of things on here being more complicated than we think, and I fully appreciate that statement. Theres alot I do not understand about the engineering of a camera. But ive built computers for years so i do understand computer parts, and the P2 solution (based on Panasonics prices) is overpriced by 50% or more.

As the camera gets closer to delivery, we’ll see alot of solutions emerge that undercut the price of the Panny P2 cards significantly.

btw there are Compact Flash cards out there that can sustain the required data rate.

A 4GB card goes for about $450 and the capacity for these cards currently goes up to 8GB. So you could definitely build your own P2 cards cheaper than the Panasonic P2 cards.
