This tutorial explains how to create the dust part of the effect. To create a burn effect before that, I usually use some sort of intense area emitter that has a fiery look to it, animate its size over a few frames, and use an Area Mask Emitter so that the burning particles only appear over the actor.

August 24, 2006 at 8:03 pm in reply to: Elvis Deane’s disinteegrating persons-tutorial…doesn’t work 🙁If it’s shown over the entire video, then it means either you have the emitter on the wrong layer and it isn’t taking into account the transparency information from the background image, or your background image doesn’t have an alpha channel.
If you’re using the footage in the zip, then it should work fine.

If you boost up the life in the “fishside” particle type (the bottom most life graph), that should do it. You’ll have to go in and change the first key in the Transparency gradient to white too.

In the fish emitter you are using, set the particle type’s Number graph to 900. That will create 900 particles per second, or 30 new particles per frame.
Select the emitter’s overall Number graph, set it to 100% at frame 1 and 0% at frame 2. You should now have 30 fish born at frame 1 and none born after that.
Increase the particle type’s Life graph to something high so that the fish live throughout your entire project. I just did a little test, and it seems like a value of around 1200 would let them live that long.

August 22, 2006 at 7:16 pm in reply to: Best Emitters To Use To Pull Off These FX Shots? It’s not so much that no one knows, it’s just that it can take a while to go through all the libraries to find one effect, let alone 9. Best way to look through them is to look at the thumbnails in the Load Library interface. But here are a few that I can point you to.
I’m pretty sure the magic wand sparkles are in the December 2003 library, and the Beam Up is in March 2005.

You can do keying using those transparency options. In the particleIllusion help file, go to Tutorial 4 and Layers>Transparency. That explains how to do simple keying withing particleIllusion. It’s not quite as good as the tools that you would find in a compositing program, but it works okay. You’ll basically just pick a few different types of green from the footage you shoot of yourself in front of the green background, and use the sliders to remove those shades from the background.
I don’t think you can do any keying effects in iMovie without some plugins. There’s one here that costs $3.50 but doesn’t look like it has a smoothing tool so it probably isn’t even as good as what particleIllusion can do, and eZedia has one that costs a bit more and does have some smoothing capabilities. Not sure how good either of these are, but they might be worth a look. I found those with a very quick look, so you may want to do your own search to see if there are any free ones.

You can do this in pI with the Transparency settings of a layer, but it’s pretty rough. If you double-click the T icon on the layer, you can check up to three colours to key out by selecting the boxes under Transparent Color Selection.

It’ll probably be a web tutorial, I don’t have any plans for a new DVD yet.

I’m working on a video tutorial on this, but the short answer is that it was shot against a green screen. I used line emitters to add some light falling on my arms and face, and duplicated the layer, blurred it, and animated its rotation to create the moving shadow.
