October 14, 2016 at 8:11 am in reply to: can someone please explain to me the obsession with Cisco switches ?Any of switches you have mentioned are absolutely fine, and nothing special about Cisco at least for DDP storage.
They are great for support etc, but so the others. We have some very big corporate clients worldwide who have exclusive agreements with Cisco so they must use them (and trow the money). It all comes from the top…

March 24, 2016 at 8:59 am in reply to: Two drives failed at once – could my computer be at fault? If you have backup thats great 😉
I have never had an issue with 2 drives failure and we have thousands system sold..So could be its just a system hiccup, but could happen that you had issue with power and damaged HDDs, raid controller etc..
I would delete whole volume, and run volume check (check for bad blocks etc) and once you are sure that volume is OK, copy data back.

March 24, 2016 at 8:54 am in reply to: Is there anything wrong with video editing off of an external SSD?Hi Tony,
You have 2013 MBP and would like to work on 4K. Its nothing wrong, actually its great to work of the SSD setup either with single unit (as yours) or in Raid as Bob mentioned, as there is no seek time involved with those drives. I guess you are working with lower bit rate something like Sony XAVC422 or Red 4K which is 30MB/s for 40BM/s, but regarding the reliability, we have systems over 6 years old with SSDs still working with no issues and with no maintenance required. I would say that those drives are more reliable (at least models we use in our servers) then enterprise HDDs.
Enjoy the smooth ride..Elvin

March 24, 2016 at 8:40 am in reply to: After data migration to RAID 10 mov files require converting to play?its nothing to do with Raid 10 and more to do with QT itself and the way it works (or not).
If file is generated on one system it puts data which is compatible with that particular system which means again that data might not be 100% compatible with your system hence conversion. Maybe you used different QT player maybe not, but why not to try some other player or version and see how it works..

I guess you are looking to get few units for your lab anyway, right?
So why not ask one of your local resellers/distributors to borrow you few different models and you try for yourself? -
Hi Jeremy,
In my opinion it will be waste of money to have DAS array + shared storage, as you would need to push/pull all of the data, meaning you will loose lots time by doing those. Also as you have said every drive needs to have redundancy which will add extra cost and make your setup more complicated.
You dont need DDP SAN, Editshare, ISIS etc, but simple and cheap NAS shared storage as you would work with low bitrate files and 8 machines at time.
You dont need even to partition drives on server, just create 100 folders for example and assign correct user to each folder user with correct permissions. Admin/teacher on shared storage can see all student data in each folder and even move data across if needed as volume is not partitioned.
If you partition volumes, any movement of data will involve copying = duplication of data, which will saturate your bandwidth and it would take time for this process..
You can even make its own storage server, example get some Dell/HP/Mac machine, load it with HDDs and that is it.
If local drives are still required, get G-Drives etc for local storage.
Hope it helps…

Hi Nat,
We have lots of users with Resolve working even with 4K 10Bit DXP uncompressed which is over 1.2GB/s single stream.
But don’t take my word for it, why don’t you ask guys from Resolve in Singapore what tests we showed them on DDP?
We can do demo in your facility if you are serious and really looking for ultimate IP SAN.

Hi Josh,
If you are still in search for shared storage with Avid/FCP/Premiere project sharing and get guaranteed speed, why dont you check DDP? Its award winning shared storage and ethernet based SAN.
Give an email to Jason Starne and ask for demo in your facility..

Hi Reuben,
If you contact Matt from Digistore in AU, he can provide you with the solution, but i will try to provide with answer to it as well.
Among other DDP products, we have 1U SSD unit and we call it MicroDDP. As you might know DDP is ethernet based SAN with guaranteed performance.
It has 8 SSD drives, 2 x 1GbE and 2 x 10GbE RJ45. Not only that you can combine 2 x 1GbE to get 200MB/s but in future and when there is request for 4K DPX 10Bit, you can combine 2 x 10GbE and get over 1.6GB/s.
There is also model with 4 x SSD and 7 x 1GbE. So you can combine 2-3 ports and double/triple cable speed.
In AU we have MTV and Disney who use MCS – Multiple Connections per Session for doubling the cable speed and Matt can send you some videos/images of this as well.
I hope this helps.

seriously?
Use current NLE if there is paid job, once is done and over, try it…
Edit part is very nice (on paper and what I saw so far) I have 2 resolve licenses thanks to Peter from BMD.
