shared storage suggestions?
Hello! I’ll be setting up a small editing lab in an educational setting in Europe, and I could really use some input on storage. There will be 8 stations running Adobe creative cloud, mostly using premiere for video editing of documentaries. All stations in lab will have current fastest iMacs available, to be purchased this summer. We’d like to do a local storage solution, one shared storage system in the lab, partitioned for each student. We do NOT need to provide for multiple users to access the same footage at the same time. Each user will be working on their own unique footage. We’d also like redundancy of footage, in case one drive goes down. We’ll need to handle about 100 total users per year, about 20 at any given time, that will need about 30 GB each of storage. We plan to wipe the entire thing clean once a year, moving some footage to the cloud to archive. Students will shoot XAVC (possibly 4K) on the Sony x70, and we’re also planning on getting some 70D’s.
Any suggestions on the most affordable solution that would meet our needs would be greatly appreciated!

In my opinion it will be waste of money to have DAS array + shared storage, as you would need to push/pull all of the data, meaning you will loose lots time by doing those. Also as you have said every drive needs to have redundancy which will add extra cost and make your setup more complicated.
You dont need DDP SAN, Editshare, ISIS etc, but simple and cheap NAS shared storage as you would work with low bitrate files and 8 machines at time.
You dont need even to partition drives on server, just create 100 folders for example and assign correct user to each folder user with correct permissions. Admin/teacher on shared storage can see all student data in each folder and even move data across if needed as volume is not partitioned.
If you partition volumes, any movement of data will involve copying = duplication of data, which will saturate your bandwidth and it would take time for this process..
You can even make its own storage server, example get some Dell/HP/Mac machine, load it with HDDs and that is it.
If local drives are still required, get G-Drives etc for local storage.

why don’t you get a quote from DDP in Europe, since you will be in Europe, and see how much that costs you. And see how complex of a solution it will be for you to maintain for 100 students.DDP is in the Netherlands. Do you need their contact information ?

Can you recommend a reliable NAS? Agreed on the G-drives. The other option is to buy like 50 1TB thunderbolt G-drives and check them out to students for the semester, which would cost like 9000 Euro, but be much more complicated for use to manage. We’d like to stay in that budget range for a NAS as well.
