  • ok ive tried to upload the file about 8 times but cant even manage that 🙁

  • Hi Adam,

    wierd :s

Ive checked a triple checked but cant get the weight points to display.

Even if i open a new file, create a couple of cubes and put in a fracture object, then with FO selected, change display to ‘weight’ – still dont appear.

Anyway, that aside – I have a bigger issue with the fracture object – namely that im working with quite a funky setup of effectors from a tip I got from tim clapham using time effector and stuff…

When I replace the cloner obj. in that setup with a new one all works fine… but when I put in a fracture object – even if its created directly from that same cloner obj. – only some of the effectors in the list work – namely those shaders that create rotation and visibility – but the time effector and visibilty shaders dont seem to execute….

Do you know of ny documented limitations of the fracture object v cloner object ?

I know this is vague – ive attached a scene file if anyone has some time – as u can see the cloner object works correctly – the fracture not…

    thanks (again) in advance,

    Elin

  • Hi Chris,

sincere thanks for your time and help – ive learnt something along the way…

but now I feel truly stoopid; My partner and i realised we hadnt restarted our router for at least a fortnight, so we tried that, and yes, now everything works perfectly ;s

    Yours, sheepishly,

  • Hi Steve,

Thanks for the tip – from Bonjour Browser it seems that we arent on the same broadcast domain – tho’ im not exactly sure what means :s

I can see my own mac, network printers etc but not my other mac – same goes for other mac – sees everything but me 🙁

do u have any idea how i remedy this? In the past it all just seemed to happen automatically…

    thanks in advance,

    Elin

  • thanks adam – thats interesting – unfortunately cant run the .exe – but has given me some ideas…

I guess what im essentially talking about is 3d tiling of objects, without any gaps – almost escher like – in its simplest, base form like a cube of cubes, or pyramid of pyramids…

from this base form i would then like to clone, fan, explode elements into waves, crests, shells etc and other organics… maybe using pBlurp to morph between the two…

…but maybe i should just stick to illustrator and stop making life difficult for myself 😉

ahah – well a belated thanks for those responses/

FYI In the end I went for the Imac on steroids – at this stage it suits my needs since my “bottleneck” at the moment is the work; I dont have enough of it!

my partner and i are just starting up and I figure can always upgrade at a later stage and use the imac as render node etc etc

but thanks again, as much as u surely answer these same type of questions 50x a month the individual answers are still important to us as individual decision makers.

I guess Im in danger of comparing apples & oranges to some degree, because theres no doubt that in many fields most of us will need to widen our skill sets to progress. Moreover I think that to a large degree the kind of ever-curious, never-stop-learning mindset that quite often characterizes ‘ technically creative fields” will always drive those same people to carry on learning, its a kind of virtuous circle.

As an aside Guillermo del Toro is a high profile guy who reminds me of this quality; I would recommend an interview he gives here: https://itunes.apple.com/ie/podcast/itunes-meet-the-author/id277718644

The distinction I think I would make is in regards to truly working at a high level across very different disciplines. Tony Hudson’s reel is obviously wonderful in many respects, but you can see that he has developed several skills across fundamentally the same, albeit very broad, field: VFX.

However, and ok this might seem like nit-picking, his use of type, for example, tells me that he probably would not make a really good traditional graphic designer – or at least he would need a little focus in that area to up his skills. Please understand, im not criticizing his typography just making a point; this level of obsessiveness at every level of production is, to me, what makes the difference between the cream of production companies and the rest of us.

    Hi guys,

Having read all your posts – im gonna swim against the tide a little.

It’s obviously great to aspire to be a true renaissance man, but davinci’s are few and far between – this Job may be one of those rare examples where they can find a niche – but the truth is I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of people ive worked with who truly have a mastery of left/right brain disciplines…

and I really dont believe any business model can really rely on these exceptional individuals – there are just few and far between.

Not to say I havent met many a programmer who was convinced they had “a flair for design” or designers who were thought that knowing some javascript makes them programmers…

I dont wish to say that theres nothing “creative” about programming, mathematics or science – I certainly wouldnt dare suggest that Einstein or Feynman werent highly creative people – but Id rather hire, say, a really skilled editor than a mediocre editor who dabbles with after effects, cameras

Again, I repeat that the terms of this particular VFX job may be a little different, but as a general rule there are very few genuine right and left brainers out there…

It’s all the those pesky details :p
